Heads Up!  League Opening Day Parade, Sat May 2nd

2015 - RYBSA Opening Day Parade Info

The start of the parade will continue to be the Raynham Middle School.  The opening ceremonies will be held on Saturday, May 2 with a rain date of May 3rd.

As a result of being at the Middle School, we will have more room to meet as well as for you to drop off your children.  It will be the meeting place for all of our children and the starting point of our parade.  The Town of Raynham was very nice to let us use the school's parking lot.  Therefore, please make sure we leave it clean.

The itinerary for the parade is listed below:

10:00 - All Farm Baseball, Farm Softball, and T-Ball coaches + Pickup trucks for Tee-Ball arrive at the Middle School
10:30 - All other divisions arrive at the Middle School / Fire Trucks arrive
10:45 - Tee Ball, Farm Softball, and Farm Baseball players arrive at the Middle School
11:00 - Parade starts followed by Police escort
Ceremonies begin on Field #4 as soon as the kids show up

There will be an RYBSA Representative at the entrance of the Middle School parking lot.  You may drive into the Middle School parking lot and the coaches will be there to greet you and will get your child to their team.  If you are not comfortable dropping of your child, you can park along the side of the school in the overflow lot and walk into the front parking lot.  You may stay with the truck if it makes your child more comfortable and you may walk the parade route along the sidewalk, only 2 people are allowed to walk in the street along the side of the trucks.  However, please be careful since there will be cars entering and exiting.  You could also park at the RYBSA complex and walk back to the Middle School.  It is 0.9 miles from the Merrill School to the Middle School's parking lot.

Tee-Ball, Farm Baseball, and Farm SoftballPickup trucks will drive the T-Ball, Farm Baseball, and Farm Softball kids during the parade.  The original plan was for only T-Ball to ride but that was recently changed and both Farm Baseball and Farm Softball will also ride in the pickup trucks.  All other leagues will walk.

1 coach MUST be with the team truck from 10:30am until departure, no exceptions.  All other coaches will meet the children being dropped off and bring them to their team truck.

All Other Divisions / Leagues

All other divisions will walk the parade route in front of the pickup trucks.  The end of the parade will have a Police escort and the parade will end on Field #4.

Please let your coach know if you will be able to attend the parade so they know who to expect and let us know if you have any questions.

Historical Tidbit:

"Iron works were the dominant industry in Raynham for more than two centuries. The importance that was attached to iron works is apparent from the town seal which depicts the iron works along with the date 1652.

The Raynham iron works were not the oldest in the state.

Iron works in Lynn, Saugus, and Braintree were started prior to those in Raynham. However, the iron works in Raynham have the distinction of being the iron "manufactory" that was in continuous operation for the longest period of time. The iron works continued to operate in Raynham until 1873."

Trolley car travel was an integral part of the transportation system in the late 1800s and early 1900s. During that time, the trolley was not only one of the easiest and fastest ways to get around locally; it also provided the transportation link to many other cities and towns.

George Yelle, the town historian of Norton, MA and past president of the Norton Historical Society, will talk about the local trolley system: "A Trolley Ride from Norton to Raynham".

The public is cordially invited to attend Raynham Historical Society meetings, which are free.

Ticks and Your Dog
A boy & his Dog

Ticks can transmit dangerous diseases when they attach to a host and feed.  A tick must be attached for several hours in order to transmit Lyme disease to a host. If you check your dog (and yourself) daily, you have a chance of finding and removing any ticks before they can transmit Lyme disease.

Even if you are using an effective tick control product, you should still check your dog daily for ticks and remove any as soon as you find them. You should never remove a tick with your fingers. Tweezers work well, but be sure to grasp the tick close to the head and pull gently to avoid leaving the mouthparts embedded in the skin. Tick removal tools are also very easy to use. Avoid using lighter fluid, matches, or other products that may irritate the skin or cause serious injuries to your dog. When in doubt, ask your veterinary care team for assistance removing the tick.

Experts have Agreed On The Best Ways to Prevent Concussion

A concussion is a brain injury; the only known cure is prevention. Helmets can protect against skull fractures and more serious brain injuries but cannot prevent a concussion; therefore, it is vitally important to be well-informed about prevention. Many products have claimed to prevent concussions but none have been substantiated.

Concussion Signs and Symptoms

There are a wide variety of signs and symptoms associated with concussions. No two concussions are the same and individuals may experience only some of the symptoms. Symptoms may not show up immediately; they may be noticed a few hours or days later. Exertion exacerbates symptoms. Remember: if a concussion is suspected, the athlete should be immediately removed from play!

Baseline Assessments/Cognitive Testing

Pre-season cognitive baseline testing is relatively new to youth sports. Typically a short computerized test administered prior to the beginning of the season, it measures selected brain processes and scores the test for each athlete to establish the athlete's baseline. If a concussion is suspected during the season, s/he can re-test. The computer software compares the baseline score to the re-test score and alerts the clinician of a reliable change in the score. Computerized cognitive testing can also be used during management/treatment even when a baseline has not been established. The changes/improvements in scores over time help to determine progress toward recovery. It is important to remember that computerized cognitive baseline testing is only a tool to be used by a trained clinician. It cannot diagnose a concussion and should always be used as one component of a concussion assessment.      www.sportsconcussion.com

Humans are social animals; we need each other. Yet being there, listening and having compassion can be challenging...

"We've got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. You can't just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it's going to get on by itself. You've got to keep watering it. You've got to really look after it and nurture it."
~ John Lennon

"Intense love does not measure, it just gives."
~ Mother Teresa

"If civilization is to survive, we must cultivate the science of human relationships - the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace."
~Franklin D. Roosevelt

Time spent nurturing a relationship, in pure love, is never time wasted.
