The Spring Equinox
flowers.jpg

The word equinox is derived from the Latin words meaning "equal night." It's the day the sun rises exactly in the east and sets exactly in the west.

The March equinox happens at the same moment across the world but is converted to local time. In 2015, it falls on March 20 at 6:45 P.M. EDT, (Eastern Daylight Time), 5:45 P.M. CDT, 4:45 P.M. MDT, and 3:45 P.M. PDT.
Weather scientists divide the year into quarters, Summer begins on June 1; autumn on September 1; and winter on December
1, this way it makes it easier to compare seasonal and monthly statistics from one year to the next.    The meteorological seasons are based on annual temperature cycles rather than on the position of Earth in relation to the Sun, and they more closely follow the Gregorian calendar.                   Using the dates of the astronomical equinoxes and solstices for the seasons would present a statistical problem because these dates can vary slightly each year.

At the equinoxes, the tilt of Earth relative to the Sun is zero, which means that Earth's axis neither points toward nor away from the Sun. (However, the tilt of Earth relative to its plane of orbit, called the ecliptic plane, is always about 23.5 degrees.)

Experts have Agreed On The Best Ways to Prevent Concussion

A concussion is a brain injury; the only known cure is prevention. Helmets can protect against skull fractures and more serious brain injuries but cannot prevent a concussion; therefore, it is vitally important to be well-informed about prevention. Many products have claimed to prevent concussions but none have been substantiated.

Concussion Signs and Symptoms

There are a wide variety of signs and symptoms associated with concussions. No two concussions are the same and individuals may experience only some of the symptoms. Symptoms may not show up immediately; they may be noticed a few hours or days later. Exertion exacerbates symptoms. Remember: if a concussion is suspected, the athlete should be immediately removed from play!

Baseline Assessments/Cognitive Testing

Pre-season cognitive baseline testing is relatively new to youth sports. Typically a short computerized test administered prior to the beginning of the season, it measures selected brain processes and scores the test for each athlete to establish the athlete's baseline. If a concussion is suspected during the season, s/he can re-test. The computer software compares the baseline score to the re-test score and alerts the clinician of a reliable change in the score. Computerized cognitive testing can also be used during management/treatment even when a baseline has not been established. The changes/improvements in scores over time help to determine progress toward recovery. It is important to remember that computerized cognitive baseline testing is only a tool to be used by a trained clinician. It cannot diagnose a concussion and should always be used as one component of a concussion assessment.      www.sportsconcussion.com

                       Poetry Excursion Program

Bridgewater Public Library

Tuesday, April 14 at 7pm

The public is invited to attend a free poetry program at the Bridgewater Public Library on Tuesday, April 14th.

The program is entitled, Poetry Excursion: Let Us go Then You and I will be presented by Rev. Dr. Gordon Postill.

Poetry Recitations provide a kind of "excursion" format to ponder and discuss such themes as adventure, hope, death, friendship, and grief. After each recitation, there will be an opportunity for personal and group reflections about what the poems may have evoked.

The recitations include poems by William Shakespeare, Mary Oliver, W.H. Auden, Jane Kenyon, and other renowned poets. A complete list of the poems will be provided at the end of this 90-minute introspective, yet also interactive process.

The content and format have been specifically designed for both poetry lovers in general as well as for anyone else who appreciates exploring core aspects of the human condition.

Ordained by the United Church of Canada in 1980, Dr. Postill is a Board Certified Chaplain who has provided spiritual care to hospice patients and their families since 1991. He has been the Chaplain of Old Colony Hospice in Randolph for the past twelve years and lives with his wife Robin in Duxbury.

The Bridgewater Public Library is located at 15 South Street. Parking is available in back of the library.

McElwain School Reuse Plan - The town needs your input!

The Community Development Advisory Committee (CDAC) to Town Manager Dutton has been charged by Town Manager Dutton to "take on" the disposal/use of the old McElwain School Building on Main Street.

The CDAC needs public participation to guide the process. However, after this crazy winter, the CDAX wondered if a large group would turn out for a meeting. So, in hopes of getting greater participation at cost savings, they have decided to try a new approach and created an on-line site where people can vote on ideas, give their reasons and create others ideas. http://www.tricider.com
The CDAC urges you to be part of this process!!! Think, talk, investigate then logon and let them hear your opinions.

See below for another link if you want to see interior photos of the building. AND, visit (and Like) the McElwain School---the Next Iteration Facebook page at

"Bag It"

               "Bag It"

Monday, April 13, 6:30pm

15 South St.

In observance of Earth Month, celebrated annually in April, the Bridgewater Public Library is hosting a screening of the award-winning environmental documentary "Bag It" on Monday, April 13th at 6:30p.m. "Bag It" follows "everyman" Jeb Berrier as he tries to make sense of our dependence on plastic bags.  Although his quest starts out small, Jeb soon learns that the problem extends past landfills to oceans, rivers and ultimately human health.

The documentary explores these issues and identified how our daily reliance on plastic threatens not only waterways and marine life, but human health too.  Two of the most common plastic additives are endocrine disruptors, which have been shown to link to cancer, diabetes, autism, attention deficit disorder, obesity and infertility.
