Historical Tidbit:
Evacuation Day, Boston

On March 17, 1776 British soldiers under General Howe were forced to Evacuate Boston.  In 1768, the first  4000 troops had arrived in Boston.
By the time of the evacuation, that number had grown to 11,000.

Overnight on March 5th on Dorchester Heights, patriot soldiers under General George Washington constructed parapets and rifle pits along with cannon brought from Fort Ticonderoga by Colonel Knox.  Gen. Howe awoke the following morning to extensive earthworks upon the strategically important hill.
Rather than risk another battle with heavy casualties such as Bunker Hill, Gen. Howe made the decision to withdraw his troops by ship never to return to Boston.  The departing of troops was not only a military victory for the fledgling Continental Army, it was also a psychological victory for Boston and all the colonies.
The sacrifices and commitment of Boston citizens, the Militia through out the countryside and Washington's Army inspired the colonies to organize and fight for their freedom, eventually leading to the founding of the United States of America.

WATER QUALITY MONITORING

Time to think about spring.  Are you ready?  This winter's storms, road treatment and runoff will be impacting our local streams.  Will this affect the rivers' cleanliness?  Stormwater drainage can be noxious brews of fuels, pesticides, sewage, road salt, silt, and garbage that foul water, spread disease and damage fish habitat.  Join us as we continue to measure how clean our rivers are.  Hardy volunteers go out once a month to take samples at 2 or 3 locations each.  We then have the samples analyzed at laboratories. We can't do it without you.  If you'd like to volunteer, please give our offices a call at 508-828-1101 or email us at director@savethetaunton.org.

Rose L. MacDonald School 3rd Graders Experienced
A Bit of Boston's Freedom Trail

The Freedom Trail Foundation visited our students and recreated a bit of the Boston Tea Party, the town meeting at the Old South Meeting House, and Paul Revere's famous ride.
"Good evening my fellow sons and daughters of liberty," announced the costumed patriot to the young crowd.

The enthusiastic seven and eight year-olds learned to cheer "here, here!" with their fists in the air when they agreed with a statement at the town meeting, or yelled "fie!" when they disapproved of a political opinion.

They debated about "taxation without representation" and argued about what to do with the unordered yet heavily taxed 342 crates of tea in the harbor. They learned that the colonists wanted their voices heard and counted as they learned to govern in the new land and they disputed actions after their negotiation attempts with the British failed.
Should they burn the tea? Steal the tea? Dump the tea?

Thanks to PTO funding, history came alive for third graders in the Rose L. MacDonald School gym and the early events of the American Revolution sparked greater interest and understanding.

As the presentation came to a close, students joined actors Hoover and Ranger in a special oath: "I solemnly swear to be the best scholar I can be, to read a lot of books, ask a lot of questions, and keep having fun learning about our share of history."
Here, here!
