Historical Tidbit: The Jury System in the Pilgrim Settlement

"Although the Pilgrims sailed to the New World in the quest for religious freedom, these explorers maintained a respect, and need, for English common law.
Three years after their arrival in Plymouth, the Pilgrims codified the colony's laws. On December 17, 1623, colony officials decreed 'that all criminal facts, and also matters of trespasse and debts betweene man and man should be tried by the verdict of twelve honest men to be impanelled by authority in forme of a jury upon their oath."

"In 1641, lawyer-clergyman Nathaniel Ward of Ipswich drew up the Body of Liberties , setting the basis of colonial law in Massachusetts.
Under the Liberties 'free men' could serve on two juries in a year. Jurors were picked 'by the freemen of the Town where they dwell."

"From the beginning, even in the 17th century, failure to perform juror service was punished.  Under Colonial law, starting in 1647, 'if such person shall refuse to serve in, or take upon him any such Office, being legally chosen thereunto, he shall pay for such refusall, such fine, as the Town shall impose not exceeding twenty shillings for one offence."

Public Safety Announcement

As we are seeing record snowfall totals in such a short time frame, we would like to take a moment to remind you of some important safety tips.

The highway department has worked around the clock on the snow removal operation and their efforts are to be commended. Their work is ongoing and we certainly appreciate their dedication to the community.

As children return to school, it is particularly important to use caution when driving as high snow banks may restrict visibility. Some sidewalks have not yet been cleared, so please be cautious of pedestrians and be sure to clear the snow off of your vehicle before getting on the roadways. Please allow for extra travel time for travel during these conditions.

West Bridgewater School facebook

Be sure to clear the area around the heating vents at your home. When these vents are blocked by snow, they can cause a buildup of carbon monoxide in the home.

If you are able, we would greatly appreciate any help you can provide in shoveling out hydrants in town. In case of fire, the time it takes to clear out a buried hydrant delays our ability to respond.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.

If you have any issues, please contact the highway department at

508-894-1216 or the fire department at 508-894-1285.

United Way and Community Partners have collaborated to begin a wonderful program that is free and available to everyone year round.

The groups commemorated their program this past week by designating Wednesday, February 11th, (2/11) as Mass 2-1-1 Day.

Mass 2-1-1 is a free, confidential, multilingual information resource and referral program with sponsorships from United Way available 24/7/365 days a year.

By dialing 2-1-1 from any telephone, individuals can connect with trained, certified call-takers who will assist with information and referrals for important non-emergency health and human services, as well as volunteer opportunities.

These services are also available online by visiting www.Mass211help.org.
