Historical Tidbit :   Historical Bridgewaters

An Essay by Hazel C. Fletcher - April 1961

The West Bridgewater Public Library is in the oldest section of the Bridgewaters, in Massachusetts.  It is here that a lot of history began.

We have books of history and geneology of the old families in this district

that are of much interest to tourists who are looking up or tracing their family tree - The Howards, Ames, Willises and Edsons who came here in early 1600.

The West Bridgewater Public Library was founded in 1879 by Mr. Francis E. Howard and other interested citizens and located in the old Post Office building with 736 volumes.

They moved to the present location in the former Center Primary School building, now over 100 years old, in October 1908.

Needless to say, we are very crowded. Therefore, we are looking forward to moving into our new and modern building, voted by the townspeople, in another year.

Today, through generous benefactors and town appropriations, we have a well equipped library of 21,000 volumes including encyclopedias and magazines.

Former distinguished patrons and residents of our town were D.H. Montgomery, well known historian and author of "Leading Facts of History" and Horace Mann Willard, a former principal of the "Howard School for Girls", formerly the Howard Seminary. They were influential in the organization and selection of the original books for the library.

Public Safety Announcement

As we are seeing record snowfall totals in such a short time frame, we would like to take a moment to remind you of some important safety tips.

The highway department has worked around the clock on the snow removal operation and their efforts are to be commended. Their work is ongoing and we certainly appreciate their dedication to the community.

As children return to school, it is particularly important to use caution when driving as high snow banks may restrict visibility. Some sidewalks have not yet been cleared, so please be cautious of pedestrians and be sure to clear the snow off of your vehicle before getting on the roadways. Please allow for extra travel time for travel during these conditions.

West Bridgewater School facebook

Be sure to clear the area around the heating vents at your home. When these vents are blocked by snow, they can cause a buildup of carbon monoxide in the home.

If you are able, we would greatly appreciate any help you can provide in shoveling out hydrants in town. In case of fire, the time it takes to clear out a buried hydrant delays our ability to respond.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.

If you have any issues, please contact the highway department at

508-894-1216 or the fire department at 508-894-1285.

South Coast Rail Task Force

Meeting

February 25  7- 9 pm

New Bedford Whaling National Historic Park

33 William Street

New Bedford, MA

The South Coast Rail project will restore 52 miles of commuter rail service between Boston and the Massachusetts South Coast. Since service to this region ended in 1959, Taunton, Fall River and New Bedford are the only major cities within 50 miles of Boston lacking transit access to the City and other communities. South Coast Rail will reconnect this long-underserved region to jobs while spurring economic vitality and attracting new business and investments.

South Coast Rail will add ten new stations (North Easton, Easton Village, Raynham Place, Taunton, Taunton Depot, Freetown, Fall River Depot, Battleship Cove, King's Highway and Whale's Tooth) and reconstruct two existing stations (Canton Center and Stoughton). The stations will comply with the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) Standards, including 800-foot high-level platforms for "all doors" boarding. Other amenities will include benches, canopies and parking (in some locations).
