Historical Tidbit :

Where is the centre of Old Bridgewater?

For some inexplicable reason, the settlement of Bridgewater had failed to fix and establish a centre, despite frequent and pressing admonitions by the court of New Plymouth.

In 1656, Bridgewater had incorporated into a distinct township, without a center or definite boarders, when a grant of 300 acres was made to Capt Miles Standish. He was given the land provided it came not within the courts grant of Bridgewater. Because of this, it became urgently necessary the centre of Bridgewater should be fixed in order to ascertain its limits and extent. When Southworth knew where Bridgewater ended, then he could claim his land.

Finally in 1659, the centre was marked by a White Oak Tree, small in stature, standing on high ground. This location now has a stone marker on the East and West Bridgewater line along the south side of East Centre Street. The tree also bore the initials C.S. This stood for Constant Southworth of the New Plymouth court committee. The Plymouth Court shows no entry recorded until 1695 regarding the marking of the centre. In the end, it was the Court of New Plymouth not Bridgewater itself establishing the centre of Bridgewater township!

Random Acts of Kindness Week
graphic-globe-people-sm.gif
February 9-15 is Random Acts of Kindness Week.  Please make an extra effort this week to share your love and kindness to help make our community and world a better place.  Even a small act can make a big impact.  Some kindness ideas might be:
  • Help a neighbor during a snowstorm
  • Hold the door for someone
  • Pay for the order behind you at the drive thru
  • Pay the toll for the car behind you
  • Call or write a letter to a relative or old friend you may have lost touch with
  • Send a comforting message to someone who is down
  • Make a card for someone who is ill

The possibilities are endless.  Find more kindness ideas, quotes, stories, and inspiration at RandomActsofKindness.org.

Feel free to share your kindness ideas and stories with us on our BuzzAround Facebook page.

WB News from the Superintendents office

Make-up Snow Days

I have had several inquiries regarding the make-up of snow days so I thought I would take this opportunity to explain the process: Per the DESE regulations and Mass General Law all public schools must attend school for a minimum of 180 days. Regulations call for any days that are cancelled due to weather or other reasons between September and March 31st to be made up in full. Days missed after March 31st fall under different regulations.

Each school system builds in 5 snow days into their calendars to be used as make-up days, and if those days are not used then school gets out earlier. However, all cancelled days need to be made up so if we have more than 5 snow days then we have to make up all of those missed days.

By contract we can have school until June 30th. If the number of days to be made up would put us past the June 30th date then the School Committee would have to investigate other alternatives to make up the days, such as use of vacations, Saturdays or adding additional time to the school day. Let's keep our fingers crossed that this does not happen!

Currently we have used 4 snow days which would put the last day of school on June 24th. So we have 4 more days available if needed before we reach June 30th. Again let's hope we do not have to use those days, but we still have a lot of winter left.

I hope this helps to clarify the regulations on make-up days.

South Coast Rail Task Force

Meeting

February 25  7- 9 pm

New Bedford Whaling National Historic Park

33 William Street

New Bedford, MA

The South Coast Rail project will restore 52 miles of commuter rail service between Boston and the Massachusetts South Coast. Since service to this region ended in 1959, Taunton, Fall River and New Bedford are the only major cities within 50 miles of Boston lacking transit access to the City and other communities. South Coast Rail will reconnect this long-underserved region to jobs while spurring economic vitality and attracting new business and investments.

South Coast Rail will add ten new stations (North Easton, Easton Village, Raynham Place, Taunton, Taunton Depot, Freetown, Fall River Depot, Battleship Cove, King's Highway and Whale's Tooth) and reconstruct two existing stations (Canton Center and Stoughton). The stations will comply with the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) Standards, including 800-foot high-level platforms for "all doors" boarding. Other amenities will include benches, canopies and parking (in some locations).

SELECTMEN ACTION LESSENS IMPACT OF  COST OF NEW HIGH SCHOOL ON TAXPAYERS

Your Selectmen wish to notify you of actions they took to decrease the tax rate. "In advance of this year's tax classification hearing, the Selectmen took many steps to ease the burden on residents and businesses alike as they expected increases in tax bills. As a result, the total cost of the Middle/Senior High School project that will be borne by taxpayers actually decreased."
