Historical Tidbit:
The Great Blizzard of 78'

Monday- Wednesday
February 6- 8 1978

February 6th, 1978 was a time of primitive satellite  technology,  and meteorologists did not have the tools they have today.  There were quite a few times their educated guess was pretty far off the mark.  On February 6, New Englanders were still sore about the January 21st  forecaster prediction of only rain, which blanketed  21 inches of snow in Massachusetts and downed a record number of power lines in Rhode Island.

When forecasters began predicting another big storm, nobody thought too much of it.  They went to work and school and about their lives.

The Blizzard of '78  originally formed as a weak, extra-tropical cyclone off the coast of South Carolina.  But soon it ran into an arctic cold front moving across the Appalachians.  When it combined with unusually strong high pressure over central Canada and very cold air, the mix created the Blizzard of '78.

Here it stayed for 36 hours.  A few snowflakes  started at 10am, by 1pm there was a white-out, in some places 2 inches per hour stacked up.

This caught many unaware and unprepared.    The  statistics were staggering: 27.1 inches of snow in Boston (40 inches in parts of Rhode
Island), 99 deaths, 4,500 injuries, 350 federal troops, $520 million dollars in damages, and 3,000 cars and 500 trucks abandoned on just an 8 mile stretch of 128.

Rt 128 at a standstill, before cellphones, people chose to go out in 70 mile /hour winds, or stay in the car.  Some did not realize their tailpipes were covered & died of asphyxiation. People were also stranded in the strangest places waiting it out; movie theaters, churches, the Boston Garden. The clean up took the help of the National Guard, a declaration of a State of Emergency, and many exhaustive hours.  Schools were closed for a full week. Coastal towns were hit the hardest, losing people and whole structures to the raging sea.

There were many stories of tragedies, but also many stories of heroes. As Mike  Barnicle wrote in the  Boston Globe: "Storms build a sense of community and sharing related directly to the number of inches on the ground. Two inches and people still snarl at each other, two feet and all men are brothers."

Habig Magoon Weighs in on The Superbowl

Yes, the big game is on Sunday. Now, for sure, for close to 80 years, Habig & Magoon Insurance Agency has been based in either Brockton or Easton, MA - and the people and places and property we insure are almost all located in southeastern New England.

So you just have to know that Habig & Magoon, our employees, our customers ..are just almost exclusively all about rooting for the Pats.

Now, of course, the NFL and the Super Bowl are massive money-making enterprises and franchises.

The insurance industry does considerable business with the NFL and its yearly most high-profile event. Coaches are insured, players are insured, stadiums are insured, practice facilities are insured ... and it goes on and on.  Everyone and everything is insured.

Big money investments need to be protected.

Curiously, though, it seems that most NFL players don't buy disability insurance.  As CBS News reported in a story that ran last May, a primary reason for this is the high cost of the premiums.

Well, insurance is our business - and we just knew we could find an interesting insurance angle connected to this year's Super Bowl. And we did.

Come to find out, Insurance Journal has developed a 2015 Super Bowl prediction poll for property/casualty insurance professionals, in which various scenarios are proposed, and the professionals are to vote whether or not they will happen.

Among the scenarios posed are the following:

The combined score of the game will be within 10 points of the number of syndicates at Lloyd's.
The Patriots' longest pass completion to Gronkowski will equal the total minutes of the game's TV commercials starring Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers.
The Seahawks will cause more turnovers than Fireman's Fund had CEOs in 2013 and 2014.
TV ad revenues for the game will exceed 5% of total P/C net premiums written in 2014.
For sure, these predictions are those for which property/casualty pros are well qualified to make.

Please click here to be taken to the complete poll (which includes a button you can click to see poll results).

SELECTMEN ACTION LESSENS IMPACT OF  COST OF NEW HIGH SCHOOL ON TAXPAYERS

Your Selectmen wish to notify you of actions they took to decrease the tax rate. "In advance of this year's tax classification hearing, the Selectmen took many steps to ease the burden on residents and businesses alike as they expected increases in tax bills. As a result, the total cost of the Middle/Senior High School project that will be borne by taxpayers actually decreased."

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Chiropractic Care

Your wrist problem may be a misalignment of one or more joints in your neck, shoulder, elbow or wrist.
Chiropractic techniques that work so well with the spine can be applied to other joints of the body. Virtually every joint is susceptible to fixations and malfunctions that impair function and range of motion. Trauma, micro-traumas, vibrations and repetitive motions are often culprits.
The Tunnel
The carpal tunnel is a band of ligaments and small bones in your wrist. Painful symptoms can result when nerves are compressed by a collapse of this nerve "tunnel."
The Spine
Many are surprised to learn that the cause of their wrist problem may be due to functional changes to one or more joints of the neck, shoulder, elbow or wrist. Vertebral Subluxations in the upper spine may compromise the workings of any structure between it and the tip of your littlest finger. This is often called the double crush syndrome.
It just makes sense to take the more conservative approach first: chiropractic first, drugs second and surgery last!

Howard School Geography Bee

Howard School's Geography Bee competition took place on Friday, January 16, with ten finalists competing for Geo Bee champion and a chance to qualify for the state competition.

Each of the finalists competed in seven rounds of the preliminary competition in Mrs. Mills classroom in mid-November.

The students with the top three scores in 4th and 5th grade were named finalists in their grade.

In the 6th grade, the student with the best score from each of the four social studies classes became finalists for their grade.

4th Grade Finalists: Brendan Gallivan, Jaiden Lee-Andrews, Stephen Nardelli
5th Grade Finalists: Landon Bailey, Maddie Bain, Matt Outerbridge
6th Grade Finalists: Ben Smith, Jenna Caporella, Paul McCafferty, Reuben Kelley

"We had a great bee today!" said sixth grade teacher Anna Mills. "I have taught Geography for eight years and hosted the Geography Bee for the past seven years," said Mills. "There were lots of challenging questions-some whose answers I didn't even know-and I am so proud of all of the finalists who did their best and worked hard to get there." "I went to all the study sessions with Mrs. Mills," said Matt Outerbridge, "and it felt good to be a finalist."

Brendan Gallivan found the experience a little stressful, saying "it was hard for me to concentrate because I knew people where watching me." He added that it felt good to be a finalist, saying "I was proud of myself!"

Landon Bailey said he studied maps and landforms to prepare for the Geo Bee competition. "It was an honor to be a finalist and felt great," said Bailey. "It was not that nerve-wracking, but it was different to have 300 sets of eyes on me," said Bailey.

Finalist Maddie Bain said she used the GeoBee website to prepare, adding "it was difficult remembering the rivers."

"It takes a lot of guts to get up in front of the whole school and answer questions that challenging," said Mills, who congratulated all finalists for the dedication and hard work.

The Results:

1st place: Paul McCafferty
2nd place: Landon Bailey

3rd place: Jenna Caporella

"I cheer for all of the contestants but it was nice to see Paul win," said Mills. "This was his third time competing in the Howard School Geography Bee, and though he has qualified every year, Jefferson Roberts had won in previous years," said Mills. "Paul has studied hard over the past three years to win today."

Paul McCafferty will be taking the qualifying test next week and the West Bridgewater staff will know by the end of March if he will proceed to the state competition.

"I would like to say thank you to everyone in the West Bridgewater community who has supported our finalists and the Geography Bee!" said Mills. "I still want to get West Bridgewater on the map and make it to state championship and then nationals," said Mills. "We can do it, or should I say he can do it! Good Luck Paul! Go Wildcats!"

My brother Ben always said about skiing:"If you aren't falling down, you aren't doing it right."

In the same way making mistakes,(falling down) means I am stepping outside my comfort zone, and trying something new.

"When you find your path, you must not be afraid. You need to have sufficient courage to make mistakes. Disappointment, defeat, and despair are the tools God uses to show us the way."

The important part is having the resilience to get back up, learn from the fall (or the mistake) and make  different  choices next time.
