It's time for the Annual Fantabulous Coastal Quilt Exhibit at Bridgewater Public Library
On Display During March & April 2014
Coastal Quilt Artists (CQA) was formed in the autumn of 2004. This eclectic group of women is comprised of quilt artists from Boston and the South Shore. Some members were former students of Kathleen Weinheimer (1940-1996), a prominent Bridgewater quilt artist.
One of the featured quilts will be the Fenway Park Slice Quilt. Every year CQA makes a composite quilt based on a photo. This local landscape is then "sliced" into sections and each quilter interprets her panel. The techniques used to reproduce the photo involve all kinds of surface design including painting, photo transfer, silk screening, embroidery, fused fabrics, beads, trims, netting and massive machine quilting.
Exhibitors are: Lynne Conover, Betty Crowell, Janet Dye, Sandy Gregg, Anne Marcin, Penny Myles, Graciela Piccolo, Joan Randall, Mary Lou Schwinn, Pat Smith, and Bobbie Sullivan.
The public is cordially invited to view the show during regular library hours: Monday - Wednesday 9am-8pm; Thursday 10am-5pm; Friday - Saturday 10am-2pm Parking is available in back of the library, which is located at 15 South Street.

Historical Tidbit:

Theodor Geisel US Postage Stamp
|
Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904, in Springfield, Massachusetts. He published his first children's book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, under the name of Dr. Seuss in 1937. Next came a string of best sellers, including The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham.
In pursuing cartooning full-time, his articles and illustrations were published in LIFE and Vanity Fair and many other magazines. A cartoon that he published in the July 1927 issue of The Saturday Evening Post, his first using the pen name "Seuss," landed him a staff position at the New York weekly Judge.
Geisel's first book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, was rejected 27 times before it was finally published by Vanguard Press in 1937.
A major turning point in Geisel's career came when, in response to a 1954 LIFE magazine article that criticized children's reading levels, Houghton Mifflin and Random House asked him to write a children's primer using 220 vocabulary words.
The resulting book, The Cat in the Hat, was published in 1957. Over his lifetime, Geisel would write a total of 44 children's books. Theodor Seuss Geisel, best known as Dr. Seuss, died on September 24, 1991, at the age of 87, in La Jolla, California.

A change in state testing?
PARCC Informational Night
Monday, March 3 at 5pm
BSU-Moakley Center
If you are a parent, teacher, or know of someone who has kids in the public school system, then this message is for you.
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is hosting local community meetings so that you can learn more about PARCC, a new, high quality, 21st century student testing program. PARCC may replace MCAS in the coming years.
The goal of PARCC is to measure student progress toward the state's new academic learning standards in English language arts and mathematics, which were adopted in 2010. Over the next two years, schools statewide will "test drive" PARCC before the state decides whether to fully adopt this new test.
The community meeting will provide an opportunity for educators, parents, and other stakeholders to ask questions and get additional information about this year's field test-where students will be "testing the test"-as well as the first operational PARCC test scheduled for 2014-2015.
PARCC Community Meeting Dates and Locations
March 3, 3:00-5:00--Bridgewater State University, John Joseph Moakley Center, 131 Summer St., Bridgewater, MA, 02325

LIONS PLAN 26th INDOOR ANTIQUES/CRAFTS/FLEA MARKET
Call for vendors
Sat March 22 9am - 2 pm
Plans for the Bridgewater Academy Lions Club's 26th Indoor Antiques/Crafts/Flea Market are now in progress under the direction of Lions Peg Dunford and Cheryl Finch, co-chairs. This year's event, which will be held on Saturday, March 22 (storm date March 29) from 9 AM - 2 PM, returns to the large gymnasium of the Bridgewater Middle School (former B/R Regional High School.) The school is located near the corner of Center & Mt. Prospect Streets, at 166 Mt. Prospect Street, Bridgewater. This location has a large parking area and is handicap accessible.
Most of the 56 vendor spaces have been booked already by returning vendors but there are some 12x8 spaces still available.
For more information about renting one of these vendor spaces, prospective sellers should send an e-mail as soon as possible to lionsflea@BridgewaterAcademyLions.org, or call Lion Diane at 508-697- 3765. Spaces sell out quickly.
The flea market will have a modest admission fee of $1.00 per person (children under age 12 admitted free with adult.) Net proceeds from the admission fee, vendor rents, and Bridgewater Academy Lions sales tables will benefit local scholarships, community programs, and other Lions charities.

It just so happens this Buzz Around edition lands on the birthday of my all time favorite author.
I thank all of you wonderful readers for joining with me in our own little tribute to literary genius.
"On and on you will hike and I know you'll hike far and face up to your problems whatever they are. You'll get mixed up, of course, as you already know. You'll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go. So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact and remember that Life's a Great Balancing Act. Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never mix up your right foot with your left. And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.) KID, YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS! So... be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea, you're off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So...get on your way! "
- Oh the Places You'll Go Dr Seuss
And as we climb our mountains...
the fun is in the scenic views along the way.
