Undiscovered Minimalism
Over the course of the past two decades a previously unrecognized genre of startlingly modern looking large flatwoven rugs (gelims) has emerged from an isolated highland region in Mazandaran Province in northern Iran. No one had imagined that hidden in the forests south of the Caspian Sea there could have existed such sophisticated treasures, which in their deceptive simplicity of abstract patterning and subtle coloring are much in accord with the aesthetic canons of contemporary "minimalist" art. Moattar, Ltd. has been fortunate to obtain a new source for beautiful reproductions and interpretations of these sought after gelims. Stop in the showroom to see them firsthand.

Did You Know...
Flatweave rugs are flat woven with a loop, meaning that they have no pile. They can be made from a variety of natural and synthetic materials and can be hand woven or machine made. The pattern on the front can be viewed clearly from both sides so they are usually reversible. Strictly speaking, authentic Dhurries are made in India and are made of wool or cotton. Authentic Kilims are usually made in Turkey, China and Egypt, and are made of wool only. Aubussons are highly ornate and were originally made in France. Soumaks are another type of thicker woven flatweave originally made in the Caucasus region of Europe. An example is shown in the reproduction quick link.
