Dear Friends,

Gratz College joins the world in mourning the loss of Elie Wiesel, human rights advocate, Nobel laureate and eloquent voice for victims of the Holocaust. Wiesel once said that "one person of integrity can make a difference," and for so many, Wiesel was that person.

In Gratz news, despite the arrival of summer, the College is abuzz with activity. Summer Institute is starting now, and Adult Jewish Learning classes are soon to follow. There has also been a changing of the guard on the board of governors: we thank David Weinstein for having served as board chair and welcome Michelle Portnoff for taking on this role now.

We hope you enjoy this summer issue of The Insider.

Warmly,

Berenice Abrams and her parents, Benjamin and Dorothy Abrams

However, the larger Gratz community knows little about the generous benefactor, Berenice Abrams, z"l. For her story, read more.

On July 1, Michelle Portnoff, Esq., was named chair of the Gratz College Board of Governors, giving her the distinction of being only the second woman in College history to hold that title. Read more about our new board chair.
Faculty News
Dr. Ruth Sandberg speaking at City Hall in Philadelphia
For many, summertime offers a welcome respite from life's harried pace. However, our faculty members have been as busy as ever, publishing articles, presenting at conferences, and taking on new responsibilities. Read more.
Gratz Shines at NewCAJE
Soon hundreds of people will travel to Naperville, Illinois, for the NewCAJE conference, a national gathering of Jewish educators and administrators. With an exhibit showcasing our programs, and with many Gratz-affiliated presenters, Gratz will be well-represented at this national event. Read more.
Student Spotlight: Doron Vergun, From NEXT Student to Mid-Career Fellow
Doron Vergun

Gratz instructor Dina Maiben created the perfect match: she connected an extraordinary student from NEXT, our professional learning program for supplementary school teachers, with an extraordinary opportunity, a fellowship in the Gratz master's program in Jewish education. Read more.
Summer Reading Suggestions
Whether you're lounging in the backyard or relaxing on the beach, nothing says summer like a good book. For our annual summer reading segment, we polled Gratz faculty and staff for their recommendations and also obtained an outside list of suggested titles in Jewish fiction. Read more.
The Gratz Gourmet
In this issue, our "Gratz Gourmet" is Berenice Abrams, the generous donor featured above. Among her many talents, Abrams was an excellent baker. One of her specialties was a glazed yogurt cake - the stained, well-worn recipe card a testament to the cake's popularity. For the recipe, read more.
