Based in the Wharf Head Studio on North Wharf after moving to town from 'Sconset in 1940, Doris and her husband, Richard produced a well-known series of watercolor miniatures featuring popular Nantucket scenes. The couple frequently worked together on these copyrighted creations, Richard providing the line sketch and Doris completing the watercolor. Wharf Head Studio consisted of living quarters and an exhibition space, out of which the couple operated for an eighteen-year span. Doris' work was praised by a reviewer as 'calm, limpid, but crisply executed with an economy of line.' A native New Yorker, Doris studied at the Art Students League, Cooper Union, and with Arthur Dow at Columbia University. She developed a successful career designing theatrical scenery and costumes in New York, Newport, and later for the Straight Wharf Theater on Nantucket. Richard spent the summers of his childhood in 'Sconset. A graduate of Hamilton College, he served for ten years as American Consul in posts in Budapest, England, Havana and Canada. A self-taught painter, he also was a talented writer who contributed to The Saturday..."  (Found affixed on reverse of a Doris & Richard Beer painting)

OK Pilgrims, are you still with us?

Here's a taste of the Original
EAT LOCAL
Plimoth, Plantation, 1621

It was a determined sharing of plentitude among two cultures gathered around that first Thanksgiving table. Their symbolic union had assembled in the present, that it might seed the future.
53 Pilgrims, grateful to have survived that first harrowing year
- when as many had perished - and 90 Wampanoag, the extended families of Squanto, Samoset and Massasoit; all were hopeful of a continued symbiotic relationship among the various eastern tribes, these newcomers and nature.

Seasonal wildfowl and venison would have been presented to key Englishmen by the Wampanoag Chiefs, who's families brought fish, beans and berries to the table. The Wampanoag women prepared Sobaheg - a stew of venison and Jerusalem artichokes, thickened with  ground walnuts, chestnuts, or sunflower seeds, and Nasaump - a porridge of dried corn, pounded in a mortar and boiled in either water or clam broth with native herbs. The English preference for Nasaump was to use water, adding sugar, (when its prohibitive cost allowed) spices, and later, even milk, calling it corn pudding. No doubt good Pilgrim wives prepared mussels, though the English disdained mussels, being of a lesser meat than venison or wildfowl. The same was true of lobster. However, English cookbooks of the period had numerous recipes for seething (boiling) each, which were abundant and easily harvested.  Stewed pompion was an English recipe referring to squash and pumpkin; presented on Thanksgiving and served almost daily as a winter staple, accompanied by flesh or fish whenever possible.

In the only contemporary description of the event, Edward Winslow tells us: "Our bay is full of lobsters all the summer and affordeth variety of other fish; in September we can take a hogshead of eels in a night, with small labor, and can dig them out of their beds all the winter. We have mussels... at our doors. Oysters we have none near, but we can have them brought by the Indians when we will; all the spring-time the earth sendeth forth naturally very good sallet herbs. Here are grapes, white and red, and very sweet and strong also. Strawberries, gooseberries, raspas, etc. Plums of three sorts, with black and red, being almost as good as a damson... These things I thought good to let you understand, being the truth of things as near as I could experimentally take knowledge of, and that you might on our behalf give God thanks who hath dealt so favorably with us."
