A Message from the Assistant Community Spiritual Director
Christ is Counting on You
Fourth Day. It's pretty amazing, isn't it? We come away from our Walk with such a richer understanding of who God is -- and who we are in God's eyes. It's such a special feeling. But I've got a question to pose... As much as you've changed since your Walk, how much has your church changed? Have you seen evidence of your Emmaus experience take root in your own congregation? So often, it's easy to get so wrapped up in the deeply personal aspect of the experience that we forget that the primary purpose of Emmaus is to equip leaders for the church. Is there greater evidence of authenticity in your church community than before you experienced your Walk? Where have you stepped up to lead? And what I mean by leading is not about which committee or spotlight position you've taken on. Leadership isn't only for the Type-A, outgoing strong personalities. What I mean by leading is to be setting an example - an example for others to follow - an example they'll want to emulate. Are others beyond your closest friends and accountability group aware of how much you're praying - and reading - and listening - and offering yourself to Christ? Perhaps you're right where you need to be. That's beautiful. But in case you're hesitant - or it's been a while since those flames were fanned - I offer a word of encouragement. I was reading through the 11th chapter of Hebrews recently and I was awestruck by just how many people God has used for great things through their acts of faith. Throughout the chapter, the author recounts name after name of people whose faith-in-action God used to do tremendous things - things that none could have done through their own strength alone. "By faith, Abraham did this; By faith, Noah did that; By faith, Moses did this; By faith, the people did that; and on and on." These great figures - these "heroes of the faith" are not the only people able to do great things. Take a moment today and read through Hebrews 11 and then write down your own experiences, "By faith, I did this... By faith, God lead me to... By faith, God is leading me to..."
Keep asking - keep seeking - and keep listening for the ways God can humbly use you, my friend. God can and will use you as an amazing instrument of love and peace - in the greatest and smallest of ways. And remember: "Christ is counting on you."
De Colores,
Wally Butts

The Greatest Way to Serve
On Sunday, June 26, we celebrated the closing for Women's Walk #263 at Camp Copass, 27 Pilgrims strong. This brings the Dallas Emmaus Community to 8,510. In addition, we added a new church to the over 600 churches we already represent. In August we will begin team meetings for Men's Walk 264.
Team meetings are a time to preview talks, to recite the Emmaus Cannon, to share communion and to listen to God's calling as we prepare to serve those pilgrims who will also submit to God's calling. I enjoy team meetings. They invigorate me, encourage me, challenge me and take me back to my walk.
As part of the team building exercises we often have a time to share the moments we felt closest to Christ on our own individual walks. Some share of candlelight; some of dying moments; others of the reading of letters. If we truly take the time to reflect, we will remember many moments that were significant and added to the experience. In an effort at levity, I would submit this question: Why do we not remember the jokes? You remember those: they caused you to moan, to roll your eyes, to boo and, on occasion, actually laugh.
Those of you that know me know there is always time to laugh. It is contagious; it has healing powers; laughter is a gift of God. By now you are asking where is he going with this? Well, here it is. This past Tuesday I had the opportunity to take my son and several of his friends to Six Flags to celeb rate his 17 th birthday. Later that evening, while driving the boys home, the following joke was told: "If you don't know what to give your friends as a gift, give them a refrigerator. Then, watch their faces light up when they open it!"
I laughed out loud when I heard it and immediately committed it to memory. Clean, short, funny; the ideal joke. But then, as God often does, He opened my heart to a bigger truth. The true preparation for the next walk will only partially take place at Highland Park UMC starting in August. Some of the preparation has begun already with the selection of a Lay Director, a Spiritual Director and the team members. What you may not realize is that the most significant portion of the preparation will take place in our churches, our neighborhoods, over lunch or a quiet conversation in a living room. What is this preparation? Sponsorship!
The greatest way to help prepare for the next Walk is to sponsor someone. Without Pilgrims the Emmaus community would not grow. Individuals would not have the experience that we so cherish. There are only limited spots on the inside team, more spots on Fourth Day, but unlimited openings for Sponsors. You have God's prevenient grace to assist you. Even if you are not on the team there are unlimited openings to serve. It is a part-time job with a permanent outcome.
Sponsorship is the greatest way to serve. Give the gift of Emmaus to a friend and....Watch their face light up!

Message from the Board
Metro Committee Information
As I spoke directly to people face-to-face, or via the phone, about serving on the Metro Committee, the typical response I received was either a blank stare or silence where you could hear the proverbial pin drop. I found that most people don't even know what the Metro Committee is, or what it does. Quite simply, the Metro Committee manages those functions that serve a wide variety of areas, yet that few people even know what it is, or what it does.
The Metro Committee is a grouping of many sub-committees that play different roles in our community:
- Gatherings/Training Events
- Literature/Packets
- Music/Weekend Events
- Registration
- Secretary/Communications
- Trailer setup/take down
- Women's Team Selection
- Men's Team Selection
As you can see, there are a lot of things being done behind the scenes that you may not have ever known how they took place. As Christian Action is a key concept that is stressed throughout the walk, as well as throughout scripture, this can be an area where you can serve, not for credit or glory, but to help others without any recognition but with an open heart. As it says in 1 Peter 4:10: "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms.", and I know each of you has a wonderful gift to share.
So, if someone calls you (like, maybe me) and asks you to serve on the Metro Committee, instead of silence, please think and pray at what you can do, because everyone in our community, including you, has something to offer.
Oh, and by the way, I do have a few slots open that I would like to fill before our next meeting in August.
If you have any questions on any of the functions or roles, please don't hesitate to contact me. I look forward to working with each and every one of you.
De Colores,
Gavin Cox
