Message from the Assistant Community Spiritual Director
What's in your View?
We've had some unusual days this winter, haven't we? And the oddities continue as our forecast shows a mix of freezing days and balmier days in the 70's. That can prove challenging - almost creating a roller coaster mix of emotions as your body can't quiet adjust to this odd rhythm. I invite you to take advantage of this strange rhythm and do something intentionally every day: Look around you; sense God's presence and the gift of grace unfolding before your very eyes. A powerful moment of awareness came for me during a trip to the Grand Canyon. I got up before sunrise because the rest of my traveling companions were annoying me beyond belief and I sorely needed some alone time. While everyone else was snoring away, I grabbed my Bible, found a spot at the edge of the south rim of the canyon and began reading Genesis 1 - s.l.o.w.l.y. Lo and behold (I kid you not!) the scripture began to unfold right before my very eyes! 'Let there be light', and there it was - the rising sun! Water - and there was the river far below! Plants - everywhere! Creatures - seriously, as I read 'Let the earth bring forth living creatures of every kind: cattle and creeping things and wild animals of the earth of every kind,' a ram with huge horns appeared just below my feet, nibbled on a plant and then quickly dashed away. And then - 'Let us make humankind' - and I looked up and saw that people were beginning to mill about - talking and smiling - along the walkway nearby. It was so amazing to me that God chose that very moment to unravel creation - as each and every object was placed at just the right moment - for me to see. For me - and ONLY me! God showed such love for me that all that was done exclusively for me... Well, actually, we know that's not how God works. What changed in that moment was NOT what God had placed in front of me. What changed in that moment was that I had chosen to place myself in front of God and God's creation. Now, your view today may not be as majestic as the Grand Canyon. It's likely to be one that is cold and dark - or it may be a view filled with sunshine and warmth. God has not placed those conditions in front of you for you to dread or for your complete enjoyment - but today you are invited to place yourself in front of God and God's creation, no matter where you are and no matter what's in your view. And once you do, watch out! Because God will surprise you in beautiful ways and change your entire outlook on what's around you, and your place within it. May every moment be full of grace and mercy as you experience God in new and powerful ways, especially during the odd rhythms in this season of life! De Colores!

Message from the Board
By the Numbers
As the graph above shows, since 2010 we have had fewer pilgrims on our walks. Attendance has been dropping. Why? This is a great question, and the Board has struggled with it.
- Do we need to lower our fees? (However, the cost of the camp facilities has increased each year.)
- Do we need to have fewer walks? (We did reduce them by one less men's and one less woman's each year).
- Could we have other fundraising efforts to help keep Walk cost down? (We do use collections at Candlelight Offerings to help defray the cost of Walks.)
- We've also sold T shirts which has provided $200 above the cost of the shirts.
We have been blessed with great pilgrims and teams for our Walks, but we need more pilgrims.
We have kept our expenses as low as possible, and have been able to cover the cost of each of the Walks in 2015, but there are other expenses that need to be covered by the Emmaus Community (ie insurance, trailer maintenance, storage, upgrading and maintaining computer equipment, and other supplies for gatherings.)
If this prompts any questions, please email: treasurer@dallasemmaus.org and I will try to answer your questions. If this prompts any desire to help our community keep costs for walks down, please consider making a contribution to the Dallas Emmaus Community. To donate, send your check to Dallas Emmaus Community, PO Box 2361, Rockwall,TX75087

Old Banners, New Banners

After the busy month of December, January comes and everyone breathes a sigh of relief, or at least I do. I usually spend some time reflecting on the holiday just past and my thoughts might go like this. Wasn't it wonderful! I just love the Christmas Eve service - it's my favorite of the whole year. There is so much to do, with all the shopping, present wrapping, decorating, baking, celebrating - so much fun, so much family togetherness, so much food. Well, maybe that last one's not such a good thing. It certainly was busy. Whew - glad it's over. Now, what's next on my agenda?
What's next on my agenda is working on our new Emmaus banners. Why? Well, some of those banners have been around for quite a while. Recently, while looking on the backs of some of our banners, I noticed the dates marking when they had been made. 1994, 1995, 1996. . . that's quite a long time ago.
It may be a little late but I'd like to express my appreciation to those who long ago shared their creative sewing talents with our Emmaus community. Thank you for blessing our walks in such a way. As many of us have over the years, I've spent quite a bit of time looking at those banners while listening to speakers in conference rooms and after all this time, I have a few favorites. They're sort of like old friends now. Although still special and loved, many of them are showing their age. Accordingly, the Board has decided that now is the time for a much needed make-over.
How can you get involved? Like everything else, it takes money. We're working to keep costs low but there is still a need in order to purchase the materials (pun intended) needed to construct new banners.
If you wish to make a financial contribution towards the cost of remaking our banners, please send your check to the following address:
Dallas Emmaus Community
PO Box 2361
Rockwall, TX 75087
Be sure and mark your check as being for the "Banner Fund".
Thank you in advance to all who will desire to participate!
