Do the Meek Inherit the Earth?

"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth." (Matthew 5:5 NRSV)

The Sermon on the Mount, as found in chapters 5 through seven of Matthew's Gospel, is one of the most powerful, memorable, and beautiful collections of Jesus' teachings. This is especially true of the portion of the Sermon on the Mount usually called "The Beatitudes."

These words resonate in our souls; they speak to us of what it means to be a Disciple of Jesus Christ and a child of the living God. They teach us about how we are to live within the Kingdom of God here, today, manifested within the Church. They don't express some kind of a utopian ideal for an existence which is yet to come, but rather call us to a way of life, and a devotion to the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which is real and present even today.

Over the past few months my private study time has been gravitating more and more toward Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. I have found these words sinking into my spirit, seeping into my soul, speaking to me anew of the deep mysteries of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.  This has been especially true with the 'oft quoted beatitude: "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth."

At first glance this seems like a ludicrous statement, doesn't it?  One of my favorite quips - a favorite because it reflects the cynical thinking of most people on this subject - picks up on how absurd the thought truly is to modern thinking:

The meek do inherit the earth, but they tend to inherit very small plots, about six feet by three. (Robert Heinlein)

This is the world's thinking. The Meek are losers. They are worthless. They only get in the way, and need to be pushed aside by those with the ambition and drive to succeed. In the words of Mordred, the half-brother of King Arthur in Camelot: "it's not the earth the meek inherit, it's the dirt." According to this present evil age the meek are not a people to be looked upon as being especially blessed by God. According to Jesus, however, the meek are truly blessed; it is they - not the movers and the shakers, but the meek - who will inherit the earth.

So, it behooves us to ask a simple question: "Who are the meek?" Are they the quiet, weak, unobtrusive, mild-mannered, mild-thinking, and mild-hearted people of this world?  The world would have us think that, in order to be one of these of whom Christ speaks, we must be "milk-toast." The world is wrong.

I am persuaded that the popular mental image of a "meek" person is fundamentally flawed. The "meek" are not those who are weak, mild, or quiet. Yes, the meek of whom Christ speaks are truly quiet before God, conscious of their total dependence upon God for their salvation, but they are not mild and they are most certainly not "milk-toast."  They are alive with a drive, with a passion, with a burning love for the Will, Word, and Kingdom of God.

The word translated as "meek" was used in the ancient Greek equestrian world to speak of horses which have been tamed for humans to ride. They are not weak, mild, powerless, or lacking in spirit. Anyone who has ever ridden a horse will agree that they are powerful animals who's energies and passions have been harnessed under the firm hand of a master. They don't lose their ability to run for hours or pull heavy loads; they are intensely devoted to their master's will.

This is what it means for us to be the meek who inherit the earth. We are not deprived of our abilities, strength, vision, or spirit; rather, all of our God-given talents and energies are under the direction of the Holy Spirit. Put another way, the meek are those who have been tamed by God. They are devoted to service in the Kingdom of God, meek before the Master but bold in their proclamation of the Gospel to the world.  And, my friends, this is what each and every one of us has been called to do and be in our ministry together in the Dallas Emmaus community. We are called to be the "meek of God," serving our master with all our passions, energies, intelligence, and spirit all under the direction of Jesus Christ.

Yes, the meek do inherit the earth - they inherit the new earth which God has called us to help build and to live within.

Message from the Community Lay Director

Now that you are filled with your favorite holiday meals from Thanksgiving and Christmas and your black-eyed peas from New Year's Day, it's time to get ready for the new year in the Dallas Emmaus Community.  Here are a few events that are happening in the Dallas Emmaus Community over the next few months:

  • This weekend the DEC Board will be meeting for the annual Board Retreat to plan for the upcoming year.
  • There will be 2 Chrysalis Flights MLK weekend (Jan 16-18).  Do you know a youth who would benefit from attending a Chrysalis flight?  There are still a few days to get those applications in but you need to hurry!  Applications can be found on the Chrysalis website at www.thebutterflyer.org. Click on the Next Steps tab to find Applications.
  • We will soon have the ballots for the 2016 DEC and Chrysalis Board Elections available on the DEC and Chrysalis websites.  Please be sure to vote!
  • On January 30, we will have the community-wide Annual Training and New Year's Gathering at Lake Highlands UMC.  Training will be from 3-8pm and will include Music, 4th Day, Sponsorship, How to Write a Talk and others.  A potluck dinner (of course!) will start at 5pm and worship at 6pm.  If you are new to the community and want to get involved or have been around for a while and want to catch up with old friends, this is a great event to attend.  We hope to see you there.

  • Women's Walk #261 - February 25-28 at Sabine Creek Ranch - There are still plenty of spots available for this walk - Is God calling you to sponsor someone?

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Message from the Board
Let's Get Involved

At each of our pilgrim walk closings we heard this information read, but perhaps we were so overwhelmed by the weekend that we didn't fully absorb the contents and may still have questions as to how to get involved with the Dallas Emmaus community.  I would like to repeat that information here.

How to Get Involved In the Dallas Emmaus Community

1) The first step is very easy:  attend a candlelight service like all those people did for you on your walk.  What a heartwarming experience it is to be able to hold a candle for someone else.  The
next candlelight will be Saturday, February 27th at Sabine Creek Ranch for women's walk #261 - 7:30 pm.

2) A second way to participate is to attend a Closing. You will be blessed beyond measure to hear those pilgrims talk about what their three-day Walk has meant to them.  The next closing is Sunday, February 28th at Sabine Creek Ranch for women's walk #261 - 4:00pm.

3) A third way to get involved is to serve on a Fourth Day team.  The Fourth Day team supports the weekend with an abundance of behind-the-scene activities.  Because the Fourth Day team handles a wide variety of responsibilities, there are many different ways to serve.  The Fourth Day team does not stay on location, but comes and goes over the course of the weekend to serve when needed. If you are interested in Fourth Day service, you can find the names of upcoming Fourth Day team leaders on the Dallas Emmaus website (www.dallasemmaus.org) under the section Walks This Year. Just email them and let them know that you would like to serve. There will also be a volunteer signup sheet circulated at all Emmaus events like candlelights, closings, gatherings, and follow-ups.

4) A fourth way to get involved is serving on an inside team.  Please note that you must have served on at least one Fourth Day team to qualify to serve on an inside team.  The model of progressive servanthood for inside teams are:  service as a team assistant (TA), service as an assistant table leader,  service as a table leader,  service as an assistant lay director and finally, service as a lay director.  As the women's team selection chair, I have found that we have the most difficulty filling the team assistant positions for each walk.   We desperately need new members of the Emmaus community to serve Fourth day teams; first to qualify for, and then agree to serve as team assistants.

5) A fifth way, and probably the greatest way, to serve is to give this gift of Emmaus to someone else by sponsoring them on an Emmaus weekend. If you would like to sponsor someone on a Walk, take time to equip yourself for that journey. Obtain and read a copy of the Emmaus book called, Sponsorship.  It is full of helpful information about the responsibilities of being a sponsor and tips for how to be a good sponsor!  Alternatively, you can check the Dallas Emmaus website under the tab Sponsors to find video and other helpful information for sponsorship.  The books, plus other Emmaus books, are always for sale at Dallas Emmaus community events.

And a final reminder....

Please be sure to visit the DEC website at www.dallasemmaus.org often.  There you will find tons of information about Community activities, dates and locations for upcoming Walks, Flights and Gatherings, opportunities for becoming involved, links to past Community newsletters, and links to other Emmaus-related sites. As a matter of fact, the next upcoming Community event is a Gathering and Training session scheduled for January 30, 2016 - 3:00pm to 7:00pm at Lake Highlands UMC 9015 Plano Rd, Dallas, TX 75238.  This is an opportunity to visit with other Emmaus community members, attend some training sessions, share a pot luck dinner and share a worship and communion service together.

I hope to see everyone at one of these upcoming listed events.   If you have any questions about the team service roles and qualifications don't hesitate to contact me at robincorser@hotmail.com.
