Why was Jesus Born?

When people ask questions about the birth of Jesus they usually ask "when, where, and how" about his conception and birth, but rarely will they ask "why." Specifically, why was Jesus born? God could have worked the Divine Will by some means other than being born a human being. God could have reached across the gulf of our sins and made things right without anyone having to die. God could have wiped out our sins, converted us into perfect, obedient children, and placed us all in paradise. God didn't have to come as Jesus of Nazareth to die in our place ... right?

While it is true that God could have achieved our redemption by some other means, God nevertheless saved us through personal presence and sacrifice:

It was not by messenger or by angel, but by his presence, that God saved his children; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them. (Isaiah 53:9b)

God's very presence is essential to our salvation. This is, without a doubt, one of the most amazing elements in the entire Jesus-story. Another amazing element to the story is that God actually desires our response of love and faith. Sending an angel to give us a message of how to live, while wiping out our sin without any response on our part, might have worked, but it would have violated God's word. Throughout scripture, and most especially revealed in God's willingness to continually strive with the Israelites even despite their idolatry and disobedience, it is clear that God desires children who will respond with love and trust. We failed to trust God in the Garden of Eden, where we listened to and accepted the word of the serpent rather than God's Word. And, so, Jesus was born to give us the opportunity and ability to love and trust God.

"I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters, in the midst of the congregation I will praise you." (Hebrews 2:12)

Jesus' name - in Hebrew, Yeshua - means "Yahweh Saves" or "Yahweh Delivers." This is precisely what God planned to do through the incarnation, birth, life, death, and resurrection of our Lord. And, as was said through the prophet Isaiah, God's presence saves us.

"I will put my trust in him." (Hebrews 2:13a)

Jesus places his faith in God the Father, trusting that God would honor God's word and, after the crucifixion, would raise him from the dead. Such faith acts as a confirmation and empowerment of our faith as Christians. We are enabled to have faith because of Jesus' own faith.

Jesus was born to proclaim the very essence of God as the one who saves us. Jesus was born to empower our faith by placing his faith in God the Father. Jesus was born to die for us and, hence, stand with and for us before the Father as our righteous savior. God comes, in Jesus of Nazareth, to be our savior and to enable and empower our faith. No angel, no messenger, no unrelated entity could have ever done this. To accomplish these purposes, God needed to become one of us - God had to become human - so that God could die. In other words, Jesus was born to live and to die as one of us and for every one of us.

Dates are January 16-18, 2016 (over the MLK weekend) and both girl's and guy's flights will be at University Park UMC.

Applications should be sent in before the Christmas break so that we can properly plan for the number of attendees.

Chrysalis, the youth version of the Walk to Emmaus, is open to ages 15-24 who have completed the 9th grade. The cost has gone down to $95.00 and partial scholarships are available.

The Importance of Sponsorship

Are you thinking of giving the gift of the Walk to Emmaus to someone in 2016? If it's your first time to sponsor someone or even if you've sponsored many people, be sure to check out our short video on sponsorship. It covers all the important tasks a sponsor is responsible for.

One of the responsibilities of sponsors is to get their pilgrims to the follow up meeting.  We are hearing more and more that pilgrims are not told about the follow up meeting before the weekend and can't make arrangements to get to the meeting at the last minute. Follow up is an important time for the pilgrims to connect and share their Fourth Day experiences as well as to find a reunion group. Please don't discount this experience.

Good sponsorship is very important to the success of each walk. If pilgrims are unprepared for the weekend or aren't told about the follow up meeting on Tuesday after the walk, it impacts their experience.

Teams are currently forming for our next two walks:
                Women's Walk #261 - February 25-28, 2016
                Men's Walk #262 - April 14-17, 2016

There is still room on each of these walks. Who do you know that would benefit from attending the Walk to Emmaus?

I wish each of you a joyous Christmas season.

Message from the Board
Christmas is right around the corner

The Holiday season is a special time to many people. Some see the religious meaning in the word Christmas and embrace it, and then there are those who think the politically correct way to express the Christmas spirit is just to say Happy Holidays. Well, in the words of the famous patriot Nathan Hale "give me Merry Christmas or give me Happy Holidays". I will take Merry Christmas.

This is the time of year when friends and family come together to share their many blessings and to celebrate all the good things in life. The baby Jesus has to rank right up there at the top of the blessings and celebration list. When you think about it, how many times have you seen a baby smile or heard a baby laugh then just get tickled and realize all their innocence. Is there anything better?

I want to share with you a short Christmas poem written by Marjorie Barrows. Take a few quiet minutes and ponder what it must have been like to be in Bethlehem when Jesus was lying in the manger just smiling away. Enjoy and by the way ........ Merry Christmas.

"Christmas Gifts"

The night was cool, the night was still,
The desert sand was soft and white,
And there were stars up in the sky
And one was bright.

And silently it shone upon
The Wise Men as they rode along,
While in their hearts the Wise Men sang
A Christmas song.

And when they reached the manger, there
Was Mary with her new-born child,
And when He saw His gifts, I'm sure
The Baby smiled.
(written by Marjorie Barrows)
