Message from the Community Spiritual Director

Prayer as a Means of Grace

Prayer is one of the fundamental Means of Grace. It is a glorious gift of God's love, for in and through it each and every one of us can come before the throne of Grace and enter into a personal, meaningful, life-transforming relationship with the Almighty Creator of the entire Universe. So frequently we treat prayer as if it were some strange, unnatural, foreign practice of super-spiritual piety; in truth, it is the most natural, human, simplest, and least distant Means of Grace.

In and through prayer-both individual and communal-we are brought into a closer abiding relationship with God. Prayer isn't just our talking to God; prayer is also our listening to the voice of God in our lives. We can hear God's voice in many different ways: directly and indirectly through the words of Scripture, through the words of the great Christian authors and poets, through the words of our family, friends, and loved ones; there are many ways of hearing the voice of God. Prayer is about opening ourselves to God's voice and allowing God to speak to us, wherever we are and whatever our needs may be.

Sometimes we get so super-spiritual about prayer that we miss the radical reality of its important presence in our lives. We are called to pray everywhere and at all times-not just at Church and not just in private. Indeed, our very lives are called to be a "prayer unto God." I particularly love the words of St. Paul concerning prayer:

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:4-7 NRSV)

We are called to live prayerful lives that "rejoice in the Lord always." Even though we live in a world full of difficult challenges, if we will open ourselves to God we will discover the true peace of the Presence of Jesus Christ our Lord. That is how we, as a people of faith, can over come the horrible tragedies which confront us in this world: tragedies like the murder of our sisters and brothers in church, or the death of family, friends, and loved ones in natural disasters or from horrible diseases. Left to our own abilities and resources, we will surely fail to persevere amidst the disasters of this life. But, with the presence and love of Almighty God, working in us through the many wonderful means of Grace, we can be assured of the strength and peace to make it through our trials and tribulations. Note what Paul says: "do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." Bad things will happen-they always have, and in this life they always will. But through prayer, through abiding with the love of God in Jesus Christ, we can be assured that we will have the Peace of God, which passes all of our human ways of understanding.

That's the glory of the Means of Grace. They are not some theoretical, distant, unconnected theological enterprise. They don't deal with such ideas as "how many angles can dance on the head of a pin?" No ... they deal with the very stuff of the Christian experience. Sacramental Theology-the Theology of the reception of Grace-deals with how we are empowered to go from day to day, living lives of faith and action. And, one of the most important means of grace is prayer. I implore you, do not neglect it!

A Special Joy Comes From Serving Emmaus

Do you remember how special you felt at closing when you found out how many people contributed to the effort to put on your Emmaus weekend? The people who carried your luggage, prepared the food and snacks, all the agape you received during the weekend, the people who lead table discussions, and music. It takes a village to put on an Emmaus weekend and we need YOU to be a part of that village.Serve

We need Fourth Day Team members who don't stay on site but come and go during the weekend to help set up and take down the site, Team Assistants who stay on site and take care of agape and any needs of the conference room, Conference Room team members who present the weekend. We also need people to serve on sub-committees supporting the Board of Directors, including team selection, gatherings, loading and unloading the trailer, music coordinators, etc.

Serving on a Fourth Day Team is the entry point for service in Emmaus. We need experienced as well and new Fourth Day Team members. If you've never served on a Fourth Day Team or it's been a while since you've served, now is the time to serve. Teams are now forming for Walks 259 and 260. You can contact the Fourth Day Directors at 4DDsWalk259@dallasemmaus.org or 4DDsWalk260@dallasemmaus.org.

We also have a couple of Metro Committee positions open: 1 for Gatherings and 2 Setup/Takedown. If you could fill one of these positions please contact David Walker at MetroChair@dallasemmaus.org.

I hope that you will prayerfully consider serving on a team in the near future and I hope to see you soon!

The Parable of The Final Judgment

Matthew 25:35-40 tells the parable of The Final Judgment,  but we could also apply that parable to Fourth Day service. Oh yes, those jobs we really hope someone else volunteers for....calling sponsors, unpacking the trailer, setting up the conference room, checking candles, taking down the conference room, packing the trailer, etc.

"I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!" - Matthew 25:40

Another way to view that verse would be, "I tell you the truth, when you did the least of the jobs on a Walk, you did them for me." Every aspect of Fourth Day service is done for God and to share His love with the pilgrims and team of each Walk. Fourth Day service is not only the entry point for Team service, but it is used as eligibility to serve as Fourth Day Director. Though "walk-ins" are always welcome, in order to receive credit for Fourth Day service, you will need to attend the team meetings, sign up for responsibilities, and show up to perform those jobs.

We are grateful for everyone who has served on the Fourth Day teams and our Directors. You are the epitome of anonymous servanthood. If you haven't tried Fourth Day service or just haven't served in a while, please consider serving on one of the upcoming Walks. Your first step is to view the Walk schedule on the Dallas Emmaus website. Then, click on the names of the Fourth Day Directors for the Walk you want to work and tell them "I'm in"! It's just that easy! But don't delay, because attendance at Team Meetings is important. You'll want to get those dates on your calendar as well.

As you make the long drive to the Walk site to work for a couple of hours, then return home and prepare to do it again in a day or two, just remember who you are truly serving and know that the Dallas Emmaus Community is grateful for your service.
