Do The Meek Inherit The Earth?
The Sermon on the Mount, as found in chapters five through seven of Matthew's Gospel, is one of the most powerful, memorable, and beautiful collections of our Lord's teachings. This is especially true of the portion of the Sermon on the Mount usually called "The Beatitudes."
These words resonate in our souls; they speak to us of what it means to be a Disciple of Jesus Christ and a child of the living God. They teach us about how we are to live within the Kingdom of God here, today, manifested within the Church. They don't express some kind of a utopian ideal for an existence which is yet to come, but rather call us to a way of life, and a devotion to the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which is real and present even today.
Over the past few weeks my private study time has been gravitating more and more toward Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. I have found them sinking into my spirit, seeping into my soul, speaking to me anew of the deep mysteries of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. This has been especially true with the 'oft quoted beatitude: "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth."
At first glance this seems like a ludicrous statement, doesn't it? One of my favorite quips - a favorite because it reflects the cynical thinking of most people on this subject - picks up on how absurd the thought truly is to modern thinking: "The meek do inherit the earth, but they tend to inherit very small plots, about six feet by three." (Robert A. Heinlein)
This is the world's thinking. The Meek are losers. They are worthless. They only get in the way, and need to be pushed aside by those with the ambition and drive to succeed. In the words of Mordred, the half-brother of King Arthur in Camelot: "it's not the earth the meek inherit, it's the dirt." According to this present evil age the meek are not a people to be looked upon as being especially blessed by God. According to Jesus, however, the meek are truly blessed; it is they - not the movers and the shakers, but the meek - who will inherit the earth.
So, it behooves us to ask a simple question: "Who are the meek?" Are they the quiet, weak, unobtrusive, mild-mannered and mild-thinking and mild-hearted people of this world? The world would have us think that, in order to be one of these of whom Christ speaks, we must be "milk-toast." The world is wrong.
I am persuaded that the popular mental image of a "meek" person is fundamentally flawed. The "meek" are not those who are weak, mild, or quiet. Yes, the meek of whom Christ speaks are truly quiet before God, conscious of their total dependence upon God for their salvation, but they are not mild and they are most certainly not "milk-toast." They are alive with a drive, with a passion, with a burning love for the Will, Word, and Kingdom of God.
The word translated as "meek" was used in the ancient Greek equestrian world to speak of horses that have been tamed for humans to ride. They are not weak, mild, powerless, or lacking in spirit. Anyone who has ever ridden a horse will agree that they are powerful animals whose energies and passions have been harnessed under the firm hand of a master. They don't lose their ability to run for hours or pull heavy loads; they are intensely devoted to their master's will.
This is what it means for us to be the meek who inherit the earth. We are not deprived of our abilities, strength, vision, or spirit. All of our God-given talents and energies are directed by the Holy Spirit. The meek are those who have been tamed by God. They are devoted to service in the Kingdom of God, meek before the Master but bold in their proclamation of the Gospel to the world. And, my friends, this is what each and every one of us has been called to do in this ministry. We are called to be the "meek of God," serving our master with all our passions, energies, intelligence, and spirit all under the mastery of Jesus Christ.
Yes, the meek do inherit the earth - they inherit the new earth which Jesus is bringing, and which he has for us to build and live within. Praise be to God!

A Good Way to Live
I went to a funeral recently. It was for a gentleman who passed away at the age of 88. I didn't know him, but I know his family so to honor them, I attended his service. What a joy and inspiration it was! Those who spoke during his service told of a man who was unfailingly kind, of someone who always made an effort to notice and include others, a man of grace. He'd lost his wife, he'd lost his independence, and finally he lost his battle with cancer, but he never lost his faith. In the assisted living facility where he lived, he tried to be a welcoming face and a friend to new residents, helping others negotiate the sometimes troubled waters that come with age. As a lifelong educator, he might have been retired from "work", but he never retired from his faith. He believed in sharing the light of that faith with others, regularly inviting them to the weekly church service and the weekly Bible study at his living facility. He leaves behind a great legacy of faith and love. His granddaughter tenderly ended her talk by saying the words that even now Jesus must be saying, "Well done, good and faithful servant!"
That's the kind of person I want to be. That's the kind of person Jesus needs all of us to be. He wants our best effort. He wants us to be kind to strangers. He wants us to forgive. He wants us to notice the needs of others and to do something about those needs. Jesus is looking for people of action. Jesus wants us to make "love" a verb.
The Walk to Emmaus does just that. Think of the love that is poured out on the Pilgrims throughout the weekend. Think of the talks and which ones most impacted you. Think of the wonder of all those lights twinkling in the darkness and the music that fills the soul. Sing Allelulia to the Lord! Think of communion and leaving behind burdens at the foot of the cross. Think about it, then be a person of action and give that gift to someone else who needs it.
In this New Year, when the year is bright with hope and promise, resolve to seek first the things of God. Resolve to be a light to a world that needs it. Resolve to read and study God's word more and to put it into action. Resolve to sponsor someone to Emmaus or to Chrysalis. The time is now!

The Three Wise Men
The Bible doesn't tell us the names of the three wise men but tradition has it the wise men were named Gaspar an Indian scholar, Balthasar an Arabian scholar, and Melchior a Persian scholar. These men were probably considered to be the most educated men from their respective homelands and probably anywhere from the Far East.
Each of their names and backgrounds I find interesting and intriguing, but the legacy all three left each of us is the most wonderful blessing that can be given. Here are probably three of the most influential philosophers of their respective region of the world who hop on a few camels and begin seeking the Christ child. For all we know they probably came upon each other on some road outside of Emmaus while following the North Star in the sky.
Three wise men from various parts of the world with many different personal experiences and beliefs are looking for a new child, a new king, who they have heard has been born. I don't know what, but something piqued their curiosity to get them to travel thousands of miles through several dangers (I'm sure) just to quench their thirst for knowledge of this new born king. This is my point exactly.
Those individuals of different economic backgrounds, educations, and religions who have taken that Walk to Emmaus are following the legacy these three wise men left us as they traveled to seek Him. Simply put into words today.......Wise Men and Women Still Seek Him.

Resolve to Be Content
How's it going with your New Year's resolutions this year? If you're like most of us, by mid-January you've already slipped back into to your old ways. Perhaps is what we're resolving to do. This year I am resolving to be content in whatever circumstances may come my way. Paul says it this way in the Fourth Chapter of Phillipians: "...for I have learned to be content with whatever I have. I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me."
My life has been a wild roller coaster ride, for sure - full of peaks and valleys. Through it all, I'm learning to be content in whatever life may bring. Remember this from the Fifth Chapter of Thessalonians: "...pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
My wish for you, dear friends, is that you have a very Happy New Year, full of peace, joy and contentment.
