The Dallas Emmaus Community is teaming up with The Chancel Choir at First United Methodist Church of Frisco to host The Links for the Lord Golf Tournament to raise funds to support the Dallas Emmaus Community and Chrysalis weekend events as well as the FUMC Frisco Choir Tour. The Tournament will be held in scramble format with each golfer receiving 18 holes of golf, lunch, dinner, and a chance at terrific prizes! Registration starts at 11am, with lunch at noon, and a shotgun start at 1pm.

How can you help?

We are looking for event sponsors at the $5,000 and $2,500 levels. If you would like to sponsor our event or know a company who may be willing to support our event, please contact Kerry Goad at km_goad@yahoo.com for more information.

Also, we are very much in need of hole sponsors. This would be a great way for your reunion group to support our event. The cost of hole sponsorship is only $75! There would be a sign at the hole with the name of your group's name on it. Companies and/or individuals can sponsor holes as well. We also need volunteers to work at the golf tournament. Wouldn't this be a fun way to spend the day, fellowshipping with your Emmaus friends?!

Finally, we need golfers! The cost for individual golfers is $125, but if you sign up as a foursome, the cost is only $400 (a $25 per person savings!). Keep in mind that the tournament is on Bosses' Day, so this would be a great gift for your boss and a great way to get him out of the office for the afternoon!

Please come and join this fun event! We want you there, whether as a volunteer, sponsor or golfer!

You can find more information, and registration is easy at the following website www.links4thelord.webs.com. If you have any questions on the event or sponsorship, please contact Kerry Goad at km_goad@yahoo.com.

Worthiness to Receive Communion

For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. 1 Corinthians 11:23-29 (KJV)

This has been a difficult passage of scripture for many faithful Christians, but not because of anything St. Paul actually said. The difficulty comes in vs. 27-29, and especially with the 29th verse as it reads in the King James Version: "For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily , eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body."

To put it simply, this does not mean that you have to be worthy to partake of our Lord's body and blood. "Worthy," in this passage, is used as an adverb, never as an adjective, and, as such, it modifies the act, not the actor. The manner of partaking is in question, not the one who is partaking. What we are called to examine is the way we are partaking, and our focus as we partake. While this may have a personal dimension, the worthiness to receive was never the question. The simple fact is that no one is worthy to receive the Lord's body and blood in Holy Communion. Indeed, we come to the table precisely because we are unworthy. All we have to do is receive with our faith focused upon Christ Jesus and we will be receiving worthily.

Now, I understand that this is not how some pastors have taught this passage. On the western frontier it became common to hear a judgmental call for people to examine their spiritual lives. Instead of having their congregations focus upon the worthiness of Jesus, preachers told their flocks that they had to be "worthy" of admission to the Table. They had to be "worthy" to receive because, if they partook of Communion while being unworthy, they would profane the Table and bring sickness and maybe even death upon themselves. As a result, thousands were made to feel guilty when they came, for they knew they were not perfect. And, of course, many refused to come to the Table at all. This kind of thinking resulted in the closed communion rules which were very common among Protestants until quite recently. And it was, all of it, absolutely unscriptural.

St. Paul never said we had to make sure we were worthy before we received Communion. Only Christ is worthy. We are capable, however, of receiving in a worthy manner through faith in Christ. Indeed, as I have already said, it is because we are unworthy that we must receive. Our unworthiness makes it imperative that we receive, and receive frequently.

And this brings up another question. I am sometimes asked about the frequency with which one should partake of the sacrament. To put it simply, one should partake of the sacrament as frequently as possible, and as often as it is offered. The Sacrament of Holy Communion is a Means of Grace: it is a gift through which we are reminded of, and reconnected to, the powerful love and presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is through receiving the Sacrament that we are empowered by the mysterious Real Presence of Jesus to live a Christian life. Personally, if I go too long without receiving Holy Communion, I begin to get "spiritually hungry." To put it another way, I crave the Sacrament; and, without it, I begin to starve.

Remember: the Eucharist is celebrated at Candlelight, and the next one is October 11 at Sabine Creek! Come and feast on the riches of Christ's Presence!

Pass It On

Do you remember your Emmaus Walk, on Sunday afternoon? At that point in an Emmaus weekend, most everyone is tired and brain fried, ready to go home but not ready to leave the wonderful Emmaus bubble. Just when you've gotten used to your cabin neighbor's snoring, being told not to anticipate anything, and not knowing what time it is but not really caring all that much either, then "those in charge" tell you that before you go home, you're going to have an opportunity at Closing to get up and speak. You will get to answer TWO LITTLE QUESTIONS.

"What has this weekend meant to me?" and "What am I going to do about it?"

At the time I attended my Emmaus Walk, I wasn't a particularly good Pilgrim. Throughout the weekend, I kept thinking how nice it was for everyone else to be hearing all those wonderful talks because I was sure there were lots of people in the room who really needed to hear those messages. I confess, however, that at the time I did not consider myself to be one of them. My daughter and my best friend, who were my co-sponsors, told me just enough to get me to the retreat but not enough to scare me off because they knew that if they told me about poster parties and skits there was no way I would go. You see, at that time in my life, I was determined that I was not a public speaker and I was absolutely terrified to get up and speak in front of anybody. Rarely did I open my mouth to express my opinion in a group of strangers and absolutely never did I ever plan on ever being in front of a microphone. And, praying out loud was absolutely not going to happen!

Emmaus has a way of changing you, however; or should I say God does, if we will let Him. At the Closing of my Emmaus Walk, for the first time in my life, I willingly and deliberately got up to go to the microphone and speak so that I could answer those two little questions. Talk about your shocked sponsors! I don't remember exactly what I said, because I was truly terrified, but I do remember saying that I wanted to share my Emmaus experience with other people and that I also knew God was calling me to start a regular Bible study program. That was the beginning of my Bible Study journey, and what a journey it has been. Fourteen years later, and I'm still studying, probably always will be. When God's Word gets down in your soul, there's no way you're going to stay the same.

I tell this story because just the other day, I had the occasion to share it and the resulting transformation God has been performing in my life with a woman from my Bible study class. She knows me now as the woman I have become and not as the person I used to be, and she didn't believe me when I told her how I was before. She began thanking me, repeatedly, for sharing my story, saying God was speaking to her through me. Now, that is an awesome thing, ladies and gentlemen, and something for which I give God all the credit.

So, I want to say a long overdue thanks to the Walk to Emmaus and to all those dedicated servants who served before me. Thank you to those who obediently answered the call to serve on a team so that people like me could catch a glimpse of God's great love. There's a lot more people out there needing to know the beautiful messages of Emmaus. Volunteer to serve! Answer the call. Sponsor a Pilgrim, or two or three...

Salvation Pitstops

 Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I pulled into the first row of gas pumps at a service station to get some gas the other day. As I started to pump my gasoline, another vehicle pulled up at the far end row of gas pumps with its windows rolled down and rap music blazing loud enough to make an ice cream truck jealous. The bass was turned down so low that the ground vibrated and shook so much that I was able to shake off 10 lbs and expecting the earthquake to register 10 points on the Richter Scale. I just smiled and chuckled.

Then I thought for a minute, wouldn't it be funny if Jesus Christ own a chain of service stations and we needed to stop by weekly and fill ourselves up with salvation to keep our motor going. We could even select regular salvation, salvation extra, or premium salvation. Maybe we could even pop inside the station and pick up a soda, candy bar, and, if we had a "devil" of a headache, an aspirin. Then hop back into our car, drive off and we are saved until the next needed fill up. Wow! How fun and simple would that be?

You know what folks? If we all thought about it for a good minute. We probably already experience something similar to this routine daily, whether we are attending our home church, an Emmaus gathering, or some Christian outing. Anyone can receive eternal salvation by accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. The catch is, once you receive that salvation, you have to keep working for yours and sharing that salvation with others. It's our mission and everyday challenge.

What kind of effort (regular, extra or premium) do you put into working and sharing the miracle and special gift of everlasting salvation with others? It's your vehicle. "Happy Motoring"!

A Message from the Board

His Eye Is On The Sparrow

With the welcoming cool weather, my wife and I were recently observing the different birds that migrate to our back yard. Our observation sparked a discussion about how birds survive without anyone caring for them. Although a few birds eat the dry cat food and drink from the cat's water bowl, who cares for the rest? How do they know how to return to the same nesting spot every year? They care for their young until they know it's time for them to leave the nest. Some young birds struggle with immature wings and fall to the ground. Who watches over them? How do they know where to seek shelter in a storm? Matthew 10: 29-31 states, "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."

If God is not too busy to watch over the sparrows then I know he loves and watches over each of us to the point that all our hairs are numbered. We all face difficulties in life with hardships and trials, but God never fails us. Not only does he watch over each of us, but he still has time to watch over the sparrows, providing their needs. In difficult times, when we experience doubts and are feeling alone and deserted and we think there is no one to help, remember the lyrics to the beautiful hymn, "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches over me."
