Are You A Golfer?

As Paul ("Arnold Palmer") Revere said a few years back, "The golf tournament is coming! The golf tournament is coming!" And it is! We are in the process of finalizing the golf course location and time, which will be sometime around Columbus Day or Boss's Day (October 16th). When the details are finalized, we will get the word out. In the meantime, start forming your foursomes, gathering door prizes and/or getting someone to sponsor a part of the tournament.

The proceeds will benefit The Dallas Emmaus Community and the FUMC of Frisco. Dallas Emmaus Community's portion of the proceeds will fund Walk scholarships, Chrysalis and other Emmaus activities. Start thinking of ideas to have a successful "Links for The Lord"

Message from the Community Communications Chair
Freedom in Christ

Fireworks, cookouts, patriotic music, red, white and blue! It's July, so we must be talking about celebrating our country's Independence Day. What great memories I have from my childhood of July 4th celebrations. My family usually had a cookout with a group of other families. Every year, we'd gather at the lake to swim, fish a little, laugh a lot, and always have a cookout. There were lots of us, and we'd consume large quantities of hotdogs, hamburgers, potato salad, watermelon, homemade ice cream, brownies - you get the idea. After dark, we'd end our celebration with fireworks that the dads very carefully set off. Sometimes we'd play patriotic music and swirl our sparklers in time to the music. These are wonderful memories of celebrating our country's independence and the glories of living in a free land. To keep that in perspective, turn on the news and watch the struggles going on around the world and then thank God for the freedom we have here in the USA. (Let's all go thank someone who currently is or previously has been in the military as well.)

As wonderful as it is to live in a land where freedom reigns, I am reminded that even more importantly my true freedom is found in Christ. Hear the words of Christ as he quoted from the Book of Isaiah, "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed." (Luke 4:18, Isaiah 61:1-2) Christ came to set me free - free from worry and guilt and bitterness, free from past hurts that bind, free from shame for wrong decisions made, freedom from the fear of death and freedom from the burden of sin. Christ wants me and you, to leave our burdens at the foot of the cross and walk away free. (Think Dying Moments here!) That's way better than hotdogs and hamburgers, fireworks and patriotic music!

A quick internet search on "freedom in Christ" brought me to a long and inspiring list of Scriptures. I can't share them all, but here are just a few:

"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death."
Romans 8:1-2

"Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom."
2 Corinthians 3:17

"In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence."
Ephesians 3:12

So, my fellow Emmaus brothers and sisters, as you celebrate our nation's independence and the blessings of freedom, give thanks again to God in Heaven for the freedom we have in Christ, and maybe try to point someone lost in the right direction so that they too may find their freedom in Christ.

"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." John 8:36

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

It's great having grandkids, especially when they are just big enough to drag you a book to read over and over and over, not so much for the words you are saying, but also for the sounds you add to make it more interesting. I ask you, (and by the way I have also asked Jesus with no reply!) how many times, can one person physically sing, "The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round. The wheels on the bus go round and round, all through the town."? You get my drift. If I didn't know any better, I would think that one and two-year-olds can count and have a photographic memory because if you miss one single word or one sound that you made previously, then they catch it and give you that look, "The Look" you thought growing up that only your mother could give you. Then, you have to start all the way over at the beginning and "do it right".

I can't wait until they ask me if Jesus likes green eggs and ham. I will just look them straight into their eyes and say, "Yes, and He loves 'One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish' too!" Come to think of it, I bet Jesus loves just about everything there is to love in this whole wide world, even what you or I think He doesn't or shouldn't. He more than tolerates it, and we don't know why. He just does! Jesus has that "one-of-a-kind" love that is experienced daily, whether we are thinking about it or not. God's love is just always there. Isn't life great!

Before I sign out, and just in case my grandkids ask their Pepaw to read them this article (don't laugh - with kids anything can happen!), I will close with my favorite Dr. Suess quote, "Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You".

A Message from the Board

Be The Church

In the Body of Christ talk, we learned that Koinonia is the term used for how the early church lived together. As found in Acts 2:44-47, "All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved."

In early 2000, we lost our house. However, we were fortunate enough to still own the small house that we had when our kids were little. We had rented the house to tenants for about seven years, but we had not been inside the house during the entire time that it had been under lease to other party. When we saw the horrible condition in which our tenants had left the house, we totally freaked. And then suddenly - from where, I still don't know - God's people started showing up to help:

  • Our Senior Pastor sprung into action, recruiting and directing workers
  • Someone came and totally fixed up the A/C unit
  • A friend showed up and rewired the dishwasher
  • Sunday school classes came to wash windows
  • Our pastor's wife and daughter worked until all hours of the night hanging wallpaper and making curtains
  • People we didn't even know showed up with food to feed all the workers
  • Our music minister and his son totally rebuilt our fence
  • A contractor repaired holes in the roof and ceiling.
  • A contractor professionally painted the entire house
  • A guy who owns a carpet company installed new carpet throughout the house

God provided us with what appeared to be a brand new home in six short days. How BEAUTIFUL is the body of Christ!

My very favorite t-shirt sums it all up. On the front it says,"DON'T GO TO CHURCH"  And on the back it says,"BE THE CHURCH".

My challenge to you, dear friends, is to BE the Body of Christ...to each other and to the world.
