Message from the Community Communications Chair
Bringing in the Harvest

Farewell and Thanks!

Hello - my name is Melinda Propes and I attended Dallas Emmaus Walk #133 in March of 2000 at Lake Lavon (a site our community no longer uses), and I sat at the table of Rachel. Being recently elected to serve on the Dallas Emmaus Community Board, it is my joy and privilege to take over the job of Communications from Ruth Dunn. Let's all stop and say a prayer of thanks for Ruth and the other DEC members who are leaving after finishing their time of service and also to ask God to strengthen and encourage those of us who are new or returning to serve on the Board. We on the Board covet your prayers so that we may remain strong and faithful as we attempt to carry on God's work.

When I attended my Emmaus walk, I didn't know what to expect. My sponsors had said, "Don't anticipate", so I was surprised when we arrived at the camp and my sponsors would not let me carry in my own luggage. Next, they started making my bed for me. How nice it was to have someone do that for me. Of course, that was only the beginning. By the end of my weekend, I was thoroughly overwhelmed by the many unselfish acts of love directed at me and all the other pilgrims. Unselfish love changes things. It certainly changed me. What about you?

Jesus said to his disciples in Matthew 9:37-38, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few." Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." After saying this to his disciples, Jesus then sends them out in ministry. There are three Emmaus Walks left in this present year, one in July (a women's Walk), one in September (men's) and one in November (women's). I ask you to prayerfully consider how you may serve by volunteering for a 4th Day team, by sponsoring pilgrims, providing food and agape, and by attending send-offs and closings. Remember the glorious and overwhelming feeling of seeing all those faces shining in candlelight and then bless someone, even someone you do not know, by holding a candle for them. Doing any or all of these will help keep our Emmaus community strong, which we must be if we are to continue positively impacting the world around us. "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few." Will you join me in being a harvest worker? Don't wait! It is up to us, you and me, to bring the harvest in.

De Colores,

Melinda Propes

Ask and Give Thanks

Do you ever find yourself asking why you should give thanks with all the crime and/or evil we see on the news and in our neighborhoods today? Or do you take the view as one of the ministers in the following story.....

"Two young preachers were conducting, or rather attempting to conduct a revival in the oil fields. The tough drillers and tool-dressers jeered when one of the ministers announced a text and they booed when the other tried to lead in a song. At last, one of the preachers said to the other, "Let's take up a collection." So they circulated through the congregation with their hats and obtained a wonderful assortment of nails, buttons and one drill bit. When they returned to the platform, one said, "Brother, let us give thanks." "Give thanks!" the other exclaimed, "For what?" "That we got our hats back from this confounded crowd!"

Like you, I watch the news, read the paper and just shake my head. Then it dawns on me that I need to write my first article for the newsletter. So I begin to think of my Dallas Emmaus Family which includes fellow Emmaus Board Members and recall all the individuals I have had the pleasure to "pass the hat" with the past year. Yes, there might have been an assortment of nails, buttons, and a drill bit along the way but the truth of the matter is, there was a whole, whole lot more blessings. Thanks for the memories, but I am looking forward to a great new year of memories in Emmaus!

By the way if you happen to see any of our outgoing board members, Ruth Dunn, Chuck Rohre, Kathie Johnson, Jimmy Weaver and/or Clyda Hilliard give them a big pat on the back. They have done an admirable job for our Emmaus Community.

A Message from the Board

Discipleship

I love the book that Rick Warren put out about 12 years ago called "The Purpose Driven Life"! It spelled out quite well why we are here, saying that we were placed here BY God and FOR God, then laying out the five purposes that we should embrace that enable us to bring glory to God. Four of them were worship, fellowship, evangelism, and service; but I want to talk about the fifth one-discipleship. The Sanctifying Grace talk that we heard on our Walk to Emmaus explained how the Holy Spirit works in and through the heart and life of every believer to transform each of us into the likeness of Christ. This is discipleship!

Ephesians 4:22-24 lists the three responsibilities in becoming like Christ through discipleship:
  • Let go of the old ways of acting. "Everything...connected with that old way of life has to go. It's rotten through and through. Get rid of it!"
  • Change the way we think. "Let the Spirit change your way of thinking."
  • Put on the character of Christ. "Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness."

We know that the Walk to Emmaus was not designed "to fix people", but rather to empower church leaders and in a sense the three days of the weekend that is the Walk to Emmaus is a short course on discipleship. I take this opportunity to encourage you to sponsor a friend or loved one for one of the remaining three Walks that are scheduled this year to revitalize their discipleship process. The dates for the women's Walks are July 17th-20th OR November 6th-9th and the date for the men's Walk is October 9th-12th.
