GOD'S GRACE

By God's grace, I am given strength.

Like the mountains, I can withstand all weather.

I stand strong against the elements.

I am a rock.

By God's grace, I am given peace.

Like the sea, I will follow where He leads.

I accept His presence in my life.

I am fluid.

By God's grace, I am given beauty.

Like the flowers, I am constantly growing, though not always blooming.

I trust His power and His promise.

I am reborn.

By God's grace, I am given purity.

Like the morning dew, I sparkle in the sunlight of His love.

Through His mercy and love,

I am forgiven.

Happy Easter!

Message from the Community Spiritual Director
The Steadfast Love of the Lord Endures Forever

Sometimes the conditions of this life can beat us down to such an extent that we cannot see anything but our problems. Sometimes the darkness and despair grows so deep that we almost lose sight of our hope. Sometimes we become so focused upon our fears and anxieties that we lose touch with the One who suffered and died for us. We think we are alone. We feel as though we have been deserted. We look, and can find no reminder of God's love and presence in our lives. We become lost in what the spiritual writers sometimes call "the dark night of the soul." My friends, all Christians seem to slip into some form of this condition at sometime in their lives. All Christians, no matter how spiritual or how faithful, can become mired in the bog of spiritual depression. There is nothing unusual about such feelings; they are a part of what it means to struggle with the powers and forces of darkness in this present evil age.

However, even in the deep despair of our periodic "dark nights of the soul," the promise of God is still sure and strong and able to deliver us. The Psalmist knew it well:

O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;

his steadfast love endures forever!

Out of my distress I called on the LORD;

the LORD answered me and set me in a broad place.

With the LORD on my side I do not fear.

What can mortals do to me?

Psalm 118:1, 5-6

These words, and many others like them found throughout the Psalter, have comforted me during those times in my life when I have felt as though I was alone, forgotten by God, left to shrivel away in the wilderness. These words are simple, yet they proclaim the truth with unmistakable clarity: The steadfast love of the Lord endures forever!

According to Webster's Dictionary, the word steadfast means: "firmly fixed in place, immovable, not subject to change." The word endure means: "to continue, to last, to remain firm under suffering or misfortune without yielding." The word forever means: "for a limitless time, at all times, continually, eternally." Hence, the meaning of each of these key words speaks to us of the powerful, firm, trustworthy, tenacious, never ending love of God. When our lives are all jumbled up, when very little seems firm or established, when very little seems to last or remain, when very little seems to be permanent or eternal, it is most fitting that the Holy Scriptures remind us of God's never failing, always remaining, never ending love. We may not be able to feel the love of God in our lives at a particular moment, we may not be able to see the hand of God at work in our lives, we may not even be able to remember a time when God's love was felt and seen, but we can trust in the promise found in these words of the Psalter, a promise which is true, trustworthy, and tenacious.

Another Psalm which is especially precious to me and speaks words of assurance each and every evening as I prepare for sleep, is Psalm 31:1-5

In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge;

let me never be put to shame:

deliver me in your righteousness.

Incline your ear to me;

make haste to deliver me.

Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe,

for your are my crag and my stronghold;

for the sake of your Name, lead me and guide me.

Take me out of the net

that they have secretly set for me,

for you are my tower of strength.

Into your hands I commend my spirit,

for you have redeemed me,

O LORD, O God of truth.

Even when not in distress, even when high on the mountaintops of spiritual joy, these words fill me with a continual reminder of God's presence in my life. The Psalmist was right: the Lord truly is "my strong rock" and "my stronghold;" and, in the presence of the Lord we have nothing to fear. We may face death, pain, sickness, sorrow, fear, anxiety, despair, or depression, but the promise is still firm and sure and everlasting: we have nothing to fear with the Lord as our "castle to keep us safe."

Spring Has Sprung

Spring is here! God's amazing beauty is all around us. You just have to look! Spring also represents a new beginning.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV

What are you currently doing to make a "new beginning" in your spiritual life? Remember the Priority talk on your Walk to Emmaus? It was the first talk of the weekend. This idea was put before you: YOU HAVE THE POWER TO ESTABLISH THE PRIORITIES THAT WILL DIRECT YOUR LIFE. After going on a Walk to Emmaus and returning to your home environment, things can be difficult. After that glorious, wonderful 72 hours where we all saw God in everyone's face on that Candlelight service, we experienced God's Amazing Grace, then you are at home, and life and life's problems happen. We all start to slip back. Why don't we all take this opportunity to re-start with this Spring? We have the power to put God in front of other priorities.

The objective of the Walk to Emmaus is to inspire, challenge, and equip the local church members for Christian Action in their homes, churches, communities and places of work. Emmaus lifts up a way for our grace-filled lives to be lived and shared with others.

Do you know someone in your church who fits this description? If so, why not sponsor them on a Walk this year? Our next Walk is Women's Walk #253 July 17-20. The next Men's Walk is October 9-12.

Happy Spring and Easter to All!

De Colores,

Ruth Dunn

  • Kenna Davidson

A special thanks also to those who ran but were not elected. Our community would have been well served by any of the candidates.

The following Board members will be completing their three-year terms as the new members begin their service:

  • Ruth Dunn
  • Kathie Johnson
  • Chuck Rohre
  • Jimmy Weaver

Many thanks to them for great service to the Dallas Emmaus Community.

There are so many ways to serve our community - sponsoring a pilgrim, attending gatherings and Candlelights, serving on a 4th day team, and serving on the inside team. Please prayerfully how you will step up and serve your community in this coming year.

A Message from the Board

Servanthood

Some of my most special Emmaus experiences after my Walk as a Pilgrim have been the times I have spent working on conference room teams. It is such a privilege to serve the Pilgrims as a table leader or assistant table leader and then later as other conference room support people.

Our Dallas Emmaus community's requirements for Team service follows the Progressive Servanthood model outlined below.

  • Entry point for team service and the first eligibility for team selection - you must have served on at least one Dallas fourth day team in the last five years.
  • The next level of service you serve in an outside of conference room Support role - this is the role of Team Assistant
  • After that, the next level of service is that of Assistant Table Leader - typically you serve 1-2 times
  • Next - Table Leader at least 2 times
  • Next - Assistant Lay Director at least 2 times

Do you want to serve on an upcoming conference room or TA team and wonder why you never are getting called?

Team selection candidates are pulled from the new Dallas Emmaus community's IMS database. We need your correct contact and service information on our IMS database so that we can properly determine your eligibility to serve on a team and to be able to contact you to ask you to serve.

We need good primary and secondary phone numbers and would also like to have a good email address for you. Although we do not use email to ask you to be on a team, in some circumstances we may send you an email and ask you to get in contact with the lay director forming his/ her team.   Typically this would be used if the phone numbers listed in the database are not working.

Only you can ensure that your information is correct. Please take the time to go to our IMS website to review and update your information. Here is the web address - dec.inetmember.com

If you are new to the site, choose Register For Site. After entering some information about yourself you will receive an email with your sign on information. Otherwise just sign on with your email and password (if you cannot get on with your email - choose the Register for Site option). Your personal information can be found in the tab YOU after signing on to the IMS system. Please verify your information and make changes where necessary. Be sure to SAVE your information.

Alternatively do you wish to stop receiving calls to serve on upcoming teams? If you wish not to serve or circumstances prevent you from serving for a time or forever, please feel free to send me an email to tell me that and I will make updates to the database indicating your preference.

I'm always happy to answer any questions you have about team service or your eligibility to serve.
