2014-2015 DALLAS EMMAUS COMMUNITY BOARD ELECTIONS

Your Dallas Emmaus Board of Directors consists of twelve elected Community lay members, each serving a three-year term. Each year, four new lay members are elected to the Board, and four lay members roll off.  Similar to a Walk team, each member of the Board has a specific role, and it takes all members of the Board working together for all of the work to be done.

Ballots are now available for the 2014-2015 DEC Board elections. Two men and two women will be elected. Candidates for the men's slots are (in alphabetical order):  Ed Bailey, Kenna Davidson, Michael Murphy, and David Walker. Candidates for the women's slots are (also in alphabetical order):  Claudia Bailey, Donna Price, Melinda Propes, Suzie Purifoy.

Voting can be done in one of two ways

  1. Download and print out the ballot, mark your selections, sign the ballot, and mail it back to Dallas Emmaus Community, P.O. Box 2361, Rockwall, Texas 75087
  2. Ballots may be picked up, completed and turned in at the Candlelights for Men's Walks #251 at Mt. Lebanon and for Women's Walk #252 at Sabine Creek.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT ALL BALLOTS MUST BE RECEIVED IN PERSON OR POSTMARKED BY MARCH 31, 2014!!!

Our community is blessed with willing volunteers and elected servants who give of their time and talents for the Lord. Please do your part. Please take a moment now to pray about and then vote for the four new members of your choice for the 2014-2015 DEC Board of Directors. Deadline for ballots is March 31, 2014.

Share the Love

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in us the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit, and we shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth. O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit, we may truly wise and ever enjoy your consolations. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

I recently sent out a Dallas Emmaus Community Blast about the community needing Pilgrims. As of today, we have 16 men signed up for the upcoming Men's Walk on February 27 through March 2.   The March Women's Walk now has 7 pilgrims as of this time.

I continue to urge you to prayerfully consider sponsoring a Pilgrim this year. Remember your Walk with the Lord during that 72 hour journey? Remember the glow on all the faces at Candlelight? By sponsoring a Pilgrim you give that gift to someone else. Please check our website for future Walk dates and sponsorship applications.

For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly. Psalm 84:11

Message from Community Lay Director
Gratitude

I have a friend that attended The National Convention several years ago. One of the speakers was a "happiness" expert who suggested that, to maximize happiness, we should recognize things everyday that we are grateful for. So my friend started exchanging daily emails with a friend listing three things they are grateful for that day - things like hot water for her shower, hot chocolate, sunshine. She says sometimes it is hard to come up with three things, and they are often silly things but it doesn't matter. "What it has done for me is make me appreciate the smallest things in my life (ponytail holders, hand lotion, etc.) that before I just took for granted. I have more than most, and I recognize it." She has been exchanging these daily emails with her friend for almost four years!

Wow! We definitely need to take time to be grateful. If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75% of the world. If you have money in the bank, in your wallet and spare change in a dish, you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy. If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more blessed than the many who will not even survive this day. If you can attend a church without the fear of harassment, arrest, torture or death you are envied by, and more blessed than, three billion people in the world. If you can hold your head up and smile, you are not the norm, you are unique to all those in doubt and despair.

Take a moment today to thank God for all the blessings in your life. Take a moment to be grateful for your family and friends and the part they play in your life. One of the things that I continue to be grateful for is my Emmaus experience and the blessings that I continue to receive from it.

Thank you......

De Colores!

A Message from the Board

Feeding the Hungry

My name is Jimmy Weaver and I attended my walk, Walk 165 in November of 2002 at Lake Lavon where I sat at the Table of Luke.
As we all had to do at closing I was asked to answer two questions: What did the Walk mean to me and what am I going to do about it? Well I have asked myself those same questions a number of times since my Walk. I have thought about those questions after taking a Bible study, reading and studying different Scriptures, and so on. But as I approached retirement, I asked myself those same two questions again. What had my time working meant to me, what had I learned about myself, and what was I going to do with the time I now had in front of me?

I had a lot of suggestions from a lot of people, but I prayed a lot and my prayers were answered when I was given an opportunity to serve through volunteering to help the homeless in downtown Dallas. Putting my hands and feet to work for the Lord in this small way has put a smile on my face and an extra step in my walk with the Lord. I have seen and felt a new meaning to the Scripture Matthew 25:35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.

When I give food and drink and welcome the 500 or so men and women each morning at the homeless shelter and they lift their heads to say thank you and a smile comes on their faces, I believe I can see Jesus smiling also.

May everyone continue to have many blessed Fourth Days.
