Message from the Community Lay Director

bible-candle.jpg
I recently heard a story of

four Bible scholars who were arguing over the best translation of the Bible.
One said he preferred the King James Version because of its beautiful, eloquent old English.  Another said he preferred the American Standard Bible for its literalism and accurate translation from the original text.  A third man preferred the newer translations because of their practical application.  The fourth scholar listened thoughtfully and then added, "Personally, I prefer my mother's translation."  When the other men laughed, he explained, "My mother translates every page of the Bible into her daily life, and it is the most convincing translation I have ever seen."

I started thinking about these words.  Do my friends and co-workers see Christ in me and the way I lead my life?  What do people that I encounter while I am out and about in my day-to-day activities - shopping, going to the doctor, or traveling - see in me and my actions?  What about the things I talk about, the jokes I tell or laugh at, the music I listen to?  I am definitely a work in progress but am trying daily to be a better example.  I want others to look at my life and see Christ.

I want my life to be a living illustration of God's love.    Lord, give me Your strength and wisdom to live each day in Your grace.  Help me be Your Living Bible.

Message from the Men's Team Selection Chair

Have you ever thought about working on an Emmaus team but just didn't think that you had the time?  Well, if you don't spend the weekend working  a walk, you will probably be staying home doing some chores.   And if you are doing chores, you will probably be using a ladder.  Ladders do slip and when they slip, you fall. And when you fall, you could break your arm.  And if you break your arm, you will have to go to the emergency room and possibly have surgery, spend lots of money on hospital bills, and spend the rest of the weekend in bed and in pain. DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU!

Instead you could have been safe and had a great time and also contributed to the objective of Emmaus which is to inspire, challenge, and equip the local church members for Christian action in their homes, churches, communities and places of work.  As part of your serving, you will also have the time to feel God's grace and love similar to the way as you did on your original walk.  Each walk is unique with its own type of blessings.

If you would like to work on a team, the only requirement is working and getting credit for a fourth day.  If you have worked a fourth day and have not been contacted to work on a team or have worked on a team or 4 day long ago and would like to reconnect, please contact me using the following e-mail address.  We would love to have you on a team

Message from the Community Spiritual Director

"The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest."

Matthew 9:37-38

It was in a communion worship service with a bunch of pastors when the preacher started talking about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  To be honest, we were all about to head to the airport to catch flights back to wherever home is and it was about lunch time.  So the thought of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich sounded pretty good.  We shared in the communion liturgy, receiving a small piece of bread dipped in grape juice, and we returned to our seats.  I don't know about everyone else in the room but I was hungry and, with a long flight looming, I was thinking about peanut butter and jelly.

The preacher finished with the things he had to say and he stepped behind the altar bringing out an old-fashioned metal lunch pail.  Big enough for one peanut butter and jelly sandwich for sure, but not for the hundreds of us that had gathered there.

As he started the benediction, something happened.  People started entering the sides of the worship space with BIG baskets.  Inside of those baskets were handmade peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, not the ready-made "uncrustable" kind, but the kind of sandwich that your mom or grandma used to make when you were really little and hungry.  He said, "You need a peanut butter and jelly because you are going to be hungry again and God will be there for you!"

There are a lot of people around us who are hungry.  Maybe they took communion at your church last Sunday but they are waiting for someone to take the time to share with them something deeper, something more.  Maybe they haven't set foot in a church in years.  They don't remember much about church, God, communion, baptism, or even the bible.  But they are hungry.  And they are waiting for something...

Jesus said, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest."  When was the last time you prayed that God would use you as a laborer?  When was the last time you shared your faith or took the time to prepare a physical or spiritual peanut butter and jelly for someone in your life who is hungry?  The opportunities are all around us and God is there waiting for you.

Message from the Community Communications Chair

Communion         At all DEC board meetings, we celebrate Holy Communion.  The Community Spiritual Director or Asst. Spiritual Director gives the message during the service. Last year, Rev. Cathy Partridge gave the message of "trying to find God in any situation".   I have been pondering that thought since that meeting.  Whenever I have had struggles....I would think...Where is God in this?   What is he trying to teach or tell me?   Have you had one of those kinds of days or even thoughts?  Just reading the paper or the internet, you are bombarded with bad or sad news.  Where is God?

As Ecclesiastes 3: 1- 8 says - Time for Everything

3 There are a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
3 a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
6 a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
7 a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
8 a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

Prayer:  Loving God, I am reminded that there is a time for everything in life.  Help me to look at each day as a new opportunity to be your servant. Amen

Be a Supporter - Be a Sponsor

I am a huge baseball fan-love the game, love the history of the game, played growing up and as a young man. This has been a tough last couple of weeks for local baseball fans around here because for the second year in a row the Texas Rangers have limped to the finish line in yet one more September swoon, dashing all hopes for a return to World Series glory.

Real baseball fans pour their heart and soul into their team-mine happens to be the Houston Astros, and if you weren't aware, they are again the unfortunate owners of the the worst record in major league baseball for the 3rd straight year, totaling 111 losses this year alone! YET, I still root for them and pull for them with the hope that they will soon turn their fortunes around.

It is fun as a pasttime to follow our favorite baseball teams, but thankfully our faith is not dependent upon how our favorite team does on the field. Rather, we place our faith in a God who never lets us down! He is our sovereign Lord, the epitome of love, our rock and our redeemer, the alpha and the omega-His word says that "if you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be given you." Additionally, we are told that if we "trust in the Lord with all our heart and in all our ways acknowledge Him, He will make our paths straight". What wonderful words of assurance!

For me personally, one of the times in my life when God's love was magnified for me was on my Walk 11 years ago. I encourage you to give the folks in your life that you care about a chance to enjoy this experience-won't you consider sponsoring a Pilgrim for the women's Walk in November or for one of the five Walks scheduled for 2014?
