Message from the Community Spiritual Director

A Friend in Need

When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. So many gathered around that there was no longer room for them, not even in front of the door; and he was speaking the word to them. Then some people came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. And when they could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and after having dug through it, they let down the mat on which the paralytic lay.

Mark 2:1-4

When was the last time you watched a toddler who was just learning to walk? Every step is an accomplishment! Each day the little one might add one more step to the distance before taking a tumble... and yet they get back up and start walking once again.

We read this story about the paralytic man being carried to Jesus on a mat. His friends care enough about him to forge the crowds, to maneuver their way to the roof of the home where Jesus is, and to carefully lay their friend at the feet of Jesus. The man can't walk, and the friends trust Jesus can make a difference.

Spiritually, we do become paralyzed from time to time. Sometimes we seem as if we are the ones on the mat, trusting in our friends or our reunion group partners to help us find our way back to Christ. Sometimes we are like that toddler; we can walk but we keep falling. As adults, being paralyzed, or just learning, can feel crippling. We each need people who will carry us or help us learn to walk with Christ (or even learn to walk with Christ again).

Whose mat are you carrying, and who will carry your mat?

Rev. Stacey Piyakuhn

Positive Affirmations

April heart

1.  I am amazing.

2.  I can do anything.

3. Positivity is a choice.

4. I celebrate my individuality.

5.  I am prepared to succeed.

Wow! These words are something to really think about and use! As we walk in our daily lives, that 72-hour Walk to Emmaus seems farther and farther away. I need reminders all the time to keep my faith strong. The good news is that God's Grace is always with us, no matter what we say or do. Group reunion or accountability groups are also another way to stay focused on your faith. How about you? Are you currently in some kind of accountability group? Have you ever attended a Candlelight?

We have a Candlelight coming up on June 22nd at Camp Copass. Please hold a candle for a Pilgrim...it will renew your faith!

A Message from the Community Lay Director

Emmaus Sponsorship

The church I attend is very much on the "big end" of congregations in the Metroplex and nationwide. Despite its large size, over 6000 members, only 60 or 70 have been on Walks in Dallas or elsewhere.  In fact, we have not had a Pilgrim from our congregation since 2011. I am delighted to report that big things are coming. This summer, we will have one woman on Walk 246 and three men on Walk 247. Why the dramatic increase, you might wonder?  It all boils down to the testimony of one person.

In May, my wife and I finished a Disciples IV class with 18 other members. At the last class, actually a mini-retreat, we examined our individual spiritual gift, through an inventory, and we were each obliged to answer several questions for the group, including what were we going do with those gifts. One class member was unanimously recognized by the group for the gift of Faith. In accepting our assessment, he credited the Walk to Emmaus for his strong and readily visible faith. He has insisted on being the first which was fortuitous.  As we progressed though the evening, the four class members mentioned above each said attending a Walk was part of their plan for the future.  Even better, they followed up immediately!

I see this as an object lesson for the Emmaus Community at my church and the Dallas Emmaus Community. Do not get discouraged - God will decide when a Pilgrim's timing is right. I pray that I will have the insight to say the right thing and for the right time to assist the Holy Spirit in this regard.

On another note, it has been an enormous privilege to serve you as your Community Lay Director this year. Let us pray for the entire Board as it serves you, and especially Carolyn Jestis, who became the Community Lay Director as of June 1, and Reverend Greg Neal, who is now (again) serving as our Community Spiritual Director. Please join me in giving them our wholehearted support.
