Message from the Board
Pilgrims Needed!

Happy Spring everyone! I thought it would never get here. I know you felt the joy of Jesus' resurrection as you celebrated Easter Sunday at your church. He is risen! With the joy and newness of this season, please take a moment to remember your Walk to Emmaus. Remember the unconditional love you felt from God, your sponsor, and the team on your walk (both those seen and those in the background)? Remember the prayer vigil - all those people that were praying for you by name throughout the weekend? Remember all of the agape and food?

Please take a moment to remember your walk, all of it......

Now think about someone you know that is ready to experience this love and offer to sponsor them on this 72-hour celebration of God's love and grace. The next walk is Women's Walk 246, June 20-23, at Camp Copass. There are currently 9 pilgrims registered. The walk after that is Men's Walk 247, July 11 - 14, at Camp Copass. There are currently 4 pilgrims registered for that walk.

Please pray about sponsoring someone on these walks. Consider offering that person this beautiful means of experiencing God's love and grace. Consider the way God will be revealed to them during this weekend and the difference you can make in their life by offering this opportunity. Maybe that person is just waiting for you to offer the opportunity. Step up and sponsor!

Message from the Community Spiritual Director

God's Faithfulness

Then the LORD said, "You are concerned about the bush, for which you did not labor and which you did not grow; it came into being in a   night and perished in a night. And should I not be concerned about Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also many animals?

Jonah 4:10-11

The book of Jonah might be the only book in the bible that ends with a question. Jonah is mad because God shows mercy to the Ninevites, and Jonah knew God would be merciful. After all, that's why he didn't want to go to Nineveh in the first place. It was a horrible place, and he knew God would show them mercy instead of giving them what they deserved.

But the author of this story chooses to end the book on a question: "And should I not be concerned about Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also many animals?" The last phrase catches my attention. If you are like me, you haven't really noticed the animals in the story until now. The whale appears. He swallows and spits out Jonah on God's command. The animals in Nineveh fast with humans in response to the call for repentance. The worm appears and chews up the bush in God's timing. Yet the story was supposed to be about Jonah!

If you could pick a message out of that last phrase, it might be that our focus in reading Jonah has been consumed by what we wanted to see and what we thought we should be looking for --- rather than the characters in the story who ALWAYS respond to God. Maybe the story isn't really about Jonah, since he spends the whole story running away. Maybe this is a story of faithfulness in the midst of opposition and stubbornness.

If you were to change the perspective on your life story, where would you see God's faithfulness?

Sponsorship

Have you ever sponsored someone to go on a Walk to Emmaus? When you sponsor someone you are committing to invite and guide and support that person. Your first act of Agape begins before the actual Walk.

Sponsorship is the most important service in Emmaus. It is a serious commitment, which should be prayerfully considered. When agreeing to sponsor a pilgrim on an Emmaus walk, you accept

certain responsibilities:

  • FIRST, before agreeing to sponsor someone, stop and ask yourself honestly, "Is the person you wish to sponsor a good candidate for attendance on a Walk at this time?"
  • Is the candidate a Christian who is actively participating in the ongoing work of their church home, a dependable church member who is the quiet backbone of the church, one who will bring renewed vision, grace and commitment back to their congregation? Is the candidate a less active member who needs the awareness of grace rekindled and their commitment renewed? Is the candidate a Christian who wishes to strengthen their spiritual life?
  • Is the candidate a church member or leader who will help the Emmaus Community remain theologically sound, centered on the core Christian beliefs of our common faith?
  • Is the candidate strong enough medically, physically, and emotionally to withstand the often demanding and taxing weekend, and is able to handle his/her own particular medical and physical needs?

Please remember that while Emmaus is a wonderful, spiritually-renewing weekend for many people, it is not right for everyone. The religious background, medical, or emotional needs of some people may make Emmaus an improper discipleship tool for them. Other persons may be unsuitable choices for sponsorship because of the negative effect they might have on an Emmaus Weekend or the divisive influence they might bring to the church.

Our Mission statement says: "Empowering leaders through Emmaus/Chrysalis to be the hands and feet of Christ."

Please Pray! Pray! and Pray! And consider sponsoring a Pilgrim in 2013.

Ruth Dunn

A Message from the Community Lay Director

The Same, Only Different

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"

Luke 24:30-32

I have two pair of dress shoes which are identical with only a slight differentiation. One pair is black and the other is cordovan. Out of courtesy to the lovely bride and the dog who often sleeps on the floor in our bedroom, I often dress in the dark. One day I was in a staff meeting at work and one of my colleagues remarked on my fashion creativity - I had on one black shoe and one cordovan.

Can't we get into ruts in our faith and the works that evidence it, when to the world it may look the same, but it's different? We are not filled with joy, sometimes see service as a chore, and do not recognize that little piece of Him in colleagues, coworkers or those strangers we meet. We are doing and saying the same things but it's different.

We will have many Walks upcoming and many of us will serve or sponsor, or do the many things required to put on Walks. But, in the spirit of a true Fourth Day Community, let us be driven by a feeling of gratitude and opportunity, rather than merely punching a card or grudgingly serving in a "been there, done that" mode. The Walks will happen either way, but it can be different and more fulfilling. Join me, the Dallas Emmaus Board, and the Dallas Emmaus Community in making it so.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13
