Message from the Board
Sponsorship

My name is Stephani Huffman and I took my Emmaus Walk in November 1994 in Amarillo on Golden Spread Emmaus Women's Walk #59 and sat at the Table of Sarah. My position with the Dallas Emmaus Board in Registration.

For registration to be successful, we must have successful sponsors. Sponsorship is one of the most important aspects to making the Walk to Emmaus successful. One cannot take this responsibility lightly. Everyone remembers how wonderful their own Walk was; sponsorship is revisiting your Walk experience with someone the Lord has laid upon your heart. Without proper sponsorship, that potential Pilgrim may never become active in their church or Emmaus Community or become a sponsor themselves. Remember, the Walk to Emmaus is not for everyone, and its sole purpose is to strengthen your church's congregation.

Sponsor people who are committed to living a life that is pleasing to God and want to grow. Sponsorship requires extensive prayer, careful planning and follow through. Keep in touch with your Pilgrim. You invested 72 plus hours in them for their Walk...make it an investment for life!

What Are You Giving?

A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are   worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on."

Mark 12:42-44

I've told the story at my church from time to time about one of my BIG discipleship denied moments. I stopped by Sonic on a Sunday morning on my way to church. It was about 6:30 a.m. The carhop, working alone that morning, brought my drink to the car and commented on the suit I was wearing. She asked if I was going to church. I responded politely that I was a pastor at a neighboring church and I was on my way to work. It was a short but pleasant conversation that I didn't think much about.

The carhop walked a few steps from my car before turning around and pulling $10 out of her pocket. She said, "I haven't been to church in a long time but I'm in a rough place right now. Would you put this in the offering plate and say a prayer for me?" I was stunned beyond words. I simply said, "Sure."

Of all the responses I could have made to this young lady's vulnerability. I, a pastor, responded only with one word. The young woman turned and went back inside.

I did put the $10 in the offering plate of our church that morning and I prayed for the young woman throughout the day. Then I ventured back to Sonic after church to let her know that I had done what I said that I would. This time she was stunned. I cared enough to notice her, to make her contribution matter, and to take the time to let her know.

Jesus says the widow's contribution means more than all of the rest. She contributes out of scarcity and she gives freely of what she has. You may have plenty of money in your bank account and you may tithe regularly to church. So let me ask you this... How is the gift of your time and attention the witness of Christ to those you see?

A Message from the Board

In The Garden

The saying that music is food for the soul is so true. Listening and even singing favorite hymns can make me feel better about myself, the world and My Lord. In this Lenten season...the hymn, In the Garden (written by Charles Austin) reflects exactly the feeling I need.

I come to the garden alone
while the dew is still on the roses
and the voice I hear falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses.

And the words of the refrain:

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
and the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

These words provide comfort to me when I have troubles. I am not alone. An old friend of mine is battling cancer and has been providing everyone she knows wrist bracelets that say: "No One Fights Alone."
This very refrain proves those words to be true. We are never alone. Our Lord is always with us.

In Hebrews 13:5 it says: Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,
"Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."

Have a Blessed Easter!

A Message from the Community Lay Director

New Beginnings

It was with a heavy heart that the Dallas Emmaus Community Board  elected to cancel Women's Walk 245. The number of Pilgrims registered simply did not allow for a meaningful experience for the Pilgrims nor meet our covenant with the Upper Room. This decision has a number of impacts, not the least of which is financial. More importantly, we lost the opportunity to bring a group of women closer to Christ and shower them with the unlimited love He can demonstrate with our Community as the hands and feet.

We, as an Emmaus Community, are at a crossroad here. We just completed Men's Walk 244 with 12 Pilgrims, the absolute minimum. We can hang our heads and bemoan our fate, or we can regroup and move forward, using this cancellation as a call for action. We will soon have a spring or summer Gathering, and the Board wants to include a planning/brainstorm session as a vehicle to move forward. We have to look at why the Community cannot locate and bring Pilgrims to the Walks. The Walk to Emmaus is too precious not to give as a gift to another.

Please join your Board in prayers for guidance and discernment. Each of our e-mail addresses are listed on the web site, www.dallasemmaus.org or you can communicate to info@dallasemmaus.org. If you have thoughts or ideas, please send them to us.
