A Message from Dallas Chrysalis
DALLAS CHRYSALIS RESTART UPDATE : DEC 2012
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
~ Jeremiah 29:11
The verse above has always been one of my personal favorites since the first time I heard it. I knew after hearing it and then reflecting on the Prevenient Grace talk I realized exactly how true this was. He does have a plan for us to be successful in what we do as individuals and as a group for the common goals of the Kingdom. It is in the planning where we are to build the strong base for this success, relying on Him to provide us with the gifts and talents we need to accomplish His goals. In order to build a successful restart with Dallas Chrysalis, we must remove the past failures and plan based upon a long term future for success. The first part of this success is in planning based upon prayer. Prayer is the most important aspect of this. Pray then plan. His plan will then be revealed for a longer and stronger Chrysalis Community for years to come.
As we are in the planning stages, I ask the community to pray for the committee members as they follow God's plan, to pray about serving on the committee or a sub-committee. Prayer is the base foundation for all the plans.
If you are interested in serving the Chrysalis Community, please email me at elroygator@yahoo.com so I can add your name to the list or I can be reached on my cell phone at (850) 528-0928. Please be on the lookout for upcoming information posted in the newsletter and sent out via email as well. I am looking forward to seeing what God's plans are through everyone in this community!

A Message from the Community Spiritual Director
But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her."
~ Luke 10:41-42
Have you stopped to take a breath this Advent season? The countdown is less than a week until the big day and there is much to be done. There are things to buy, things to cook, celebrations to attend, events to prepare for... the list goes on. But have you stopped to take a breath?
The story of Mary & Martha is one we don't usually read as we are busily preparing our manger scenes. Yet what which person do you identify with? Are you Martha, running around busily preparing? Are you Mary, pausing to soak in the wonder of the moment? Admittedly, there are times we find ourselves in both places of busy-ness and places of breath but those words of Jesus echo... "There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part."
We have the choice in these weeks of Advent to choose to pause long enough to take a breath and soak in the moment. Will you be worried and distracted or will you find the time and space to sit at the feet of the King?
Blessings during this special season!

Message from the Community Board
Out of the mouth of babes...One year, our annual Thanksgiving family gathering was graciously hosted by a younger family member. You could sense the growing concern (and hunger) by the more experienced cooks since the turkey was late going into the oven. In defense, her young daughter stood up and said, "O ye of the unfaithful."
How funny. And since there was time for reflection...how true.
Earlier this year, the Board agreed to a new scholarship fundraising event : the Virtual Wall of Honor. It also provides a public venue to remember, thank and honor special people in our lives who have stood by us in love, sponsorship, accountability, servanthood...and many other ways.
We rolled this out as a luminary event at our November Gathering at Mount Lebanon. The night was perfect for sharing fantastic chili, desserts and fellowship. Lined up outside the walkway after candlelight, the lighted luminaries naming our loved ones provided a lovely glow--as if an Emmaus Candlelight itself isn't enough. We raised enough funds to scholarship 2 individuals. Those who have current email information received notices to visit the wall, and the donors received an email notice thanking them.
It almost didn't happen, though, because I was not prepared that night for the enthusiasm and participation (With many thanks, I acknowledge that Darrell Ortiz's announcement during dinner made a difference!). Thankfully, God shored up my 'unfaithfulness' and late start with servant hands and feet that stepped up to help receive and to give.
The Community is prepared and awaits to receive your participation at our next Gathering in January and the Men's Candlelight in February.
Come, let us adore them. The Virtual Wall of Honor can be accessed on the Dallas Emmaus website. You may also see your name listed there! Give the gift of Emmaus to future pilgrims with your financial gifts and honor those special persons in your life.
During this beautiful season of Advent, we join together to prepare our hearts for the coming of our King.
With blessed assurance and faith,

Message from the Community Communications Chair
'Tis the season...
Naughty or nice...
He's keeping a list... You'd better watch out... I'm dreaming of... All so-and-so wants for Christmas is ... 'Twas the night before... Christmas came early for ... It's beginning to look a lot like...
We all see these Clichés at this time of year. We are all busy and I know I sometimes really lose focus about what this time of year really represents. The birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. He's our gift! Maybe the cliché we should be thinking about is:
Jesus is the Reason for the Season
On behalf of the Dallas Emmaus Community Board, may you have a very blessed and merry Christmas and a fantastic 2013!

A Message from the Community Lay Director
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:20
For the last several years, the church I attend has emphasized a "Different Kind of Christmas" during the advent season. This year, in keeping with that theme, we are hosting an art exhibit called WHAT I KEEP. The exhibit consists of series of photographs of homeless persons living in the Waco area. The artist, Susan Mullally, is an art professor at Baylor University. She belongs to a church called The Church Under the Bridge in Waco. The church literally lives up to its name, meeting under a bridge underpass of Interstate 35. Originally founded as a mission to homeless people, they now have 200 to 300 in worship under the bridge, rain or shine, with Baylor students and members of all stations in life. Mullally was asked to create a church directory with photos. Over time as she reached out to some of the homeless members, she began to create the series of images that comprise the exhibit. She asked them to identify and bring to the photo session the one item they keep above all others.

The variety displayed is fascinating, ranging from a homeless man who always carries his golf bag and clubs, a woman who always has her dog with her, a man who carries a pocket watch given by a teacher many years ago, a man who always has his cowboy hat since it sets him apart, a man who carries a framed picture of himself and his late wife, a veteran who values his Vietnam hat above all else, a woman who carries an antique bottle, and the list goes on. There was even one subject who said he can't identify anything since he didn't have a place to keep it.
If you were asked to identify the one material possession you would keep above all others, what would it be? Since I was first introduced to the exhibit, I have thought on that several times. Is there a material possession I value above all others? The family bible? The family portrait taken for my parent's fiftieth anniversary? They watch I have worn for over fifteen years that my lovely bride gave me for a wedding anniversary? My wedding band I have worn for over 40 years? What would it be?
A big part of the reason that I have to really deliberate on such a question is that I have been so richly and abundantly blessed. God has given me so many blessings it is a daunting task to decide between them. During this advent season, I challenge you and me to count those many blessings, be grateful for them and pass them along. As we look forward to this upcoming year, and the many more blessings He will provide, let us cherish what we give as much as what we keep.

A Thank You from the Community
Candlelight Services
Have you ever thought about what the candlelight service would be like without songs or music ?
The Dallas Emmaus Community has be blessed to have talented vocalists and musicians so we do not have to experience what the service would be like without the sound of music. These gifted individuals donate their time and talents to create a meaningful spirit filled experience
For each of us at the candlelight service, let me take this opportunity to say thank you to all those individuals who have shared their musical gifts that allow candlelight to be a blessing to all of us. I encourage everyone to make a special effort to personally thank these individuals for their time and service at the Emmaus Candlelight services
