Light up a Luminary for someone!

luminary The Dallas Emmaus Community will be having a Chili Gathering

November 10, 2012

before Candlelight at Mt. Lebanon. Why don't we all light up a luminary to honor someone?
For $5.00 you can buy a candle and a bag to light the pavilion or walk way.  You can honor your sponsor or a reunion brother or sister or anyone.  Just come, or better yet, bring that honoree to the Chili gathering and say: I want to light a luminary!!

Message from the Board
All that We Have...

All that we have is a gift from God (1Timothy 6:17)

God gave them to us for the purpose of serving Him and serving others. I heard a pastor describe it this way, and being a visual learner, the imagery made sense to me-everything flows vertically from God, and then it flows out horizontally from us to others. The parable of the talents from the 19th chapter of Luke points out our challenge! Two of the three servants entrusted with the Master's (i.e., God's) fortune while he was away, put his money to work that earned income for the Master, while the third one did not put the money to good use, making the Master very displeased. Our challenge then is to not interrupt the flow, whether it is financially with our giving or with our service to others (being God's hands and feet in the world).

talent Some have the feeling when they are giving or serving that it is being done "for God", but does an almighty, creator of the Universe really need our help? Not really. What he does desire deeply is for us to be in relationship with Him, being obedient and willing to say yes to His promptings and to His callings, then allowing ourselves to be His instruments for transforming lives in this lost world and bringing the lost into his Kingdom. I have had many people and events and things that have molded and impacted me over the course of my lifetime, but nothing more than the three day Walk to Emmaus back in September of 2002 at Mt Lebanon.

If you feel that you were blessed by the gift from God that your Walk to Emmaus might have been, won't you consider becoming more involved in the Dallas Emmaus Community with your talents, whether through serving on a Fourth Day Team, sponsoring someone you know, or through a financial gift? Service to others brings meaning and fulfillment to our lives in a way that wealth, power, possessions and self-centered pursuits can never match.

Message from the Community Lay Director
The Real Deal

Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel.  Philippians 1:27

football2

On Thursday, September 27th, the Baltimore Ravens and the Cleveland Browns took the field to play a National Football League game. The crowd burst into a standing ovation - but not for the teams. The crowd was celebrating the return of the regular officials to referee the game. During this year's preseason and first three weeks of this season, NFL games were officiated by "replacement referees," hired when the NFL owners locked out the regular officials in a contract dispute.  What's the big deal, you might ask? They wore the same uniforms; they threw the same flags and used the same rule book.  The bottom line was that the players, coaches and fans had no confidence in them or their abilities.  They were not the "real deal" and those who follow football believed that the very integrity of the game and the season was threatened.  In a previous Monday night game between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks, a game-ending call by the replacement referees resulting in a Seattle victory, while most commentators and fans hotly disputed its accuracy. The ensuring furor seemed to be the defining moment when the owners moved to end the lock out.

About a year and a half or so, the Dallas Emmaus Community commissioned Men's Walk 242, which will occur October 11-14th at Sabine Creek Ranch. The conference room and support teams have been formed, oriented and trained.  The talks have been written and previewed. An outstanding and very loving Fourth Day Team has assembled and is more than ready to be His hands and feet to serve the conference room team and the pilgrims. As of this writing, 18 pilgrims have been called by God to attend this Walk; by the Walk date, more will most likely have been called.

After being graced by spending four Saturdays in team meetings with the conference room team, I can accurately and confidently report that they are in fact, "the real deal."  One of the characteristics of a Disciple is that his witness is authentic. While some may not be able to give you scholarly discourses on Christianity, this team lives and breathes it.  As Saint Frances of Assisi is quoted, "Preach a great sermon and, if needed, use words."  They do so with their lives, demonstrating a living, breathing faith. They have committed to the Emmaus Cannon, to make us servants of the pilgrims, putting them first.  They have committed to putting aside their pride and egos to give the Spirit room to work in the table discussions and interactions with the pilgrims.  They have committed to the Emmaus model, not their agenda or mine.

My late Uncle Bob, when he described what he considered a good man, would say that "his feet stink and he loves his Jesus." I cannot attest to the former but I can affirm the latter without hesitation.

But, friends, don't take my word for it.  I strongly urge you to "quality check" us and our work. In true Emmaus fashion, hold us accountable.  You can do that by attending Candlelight on Saturday, October 13th or Closing on Sunday, October 14th at Sabine Creek Ranch. We as a team, in every sense of that word, are honored by the trust and confidence that the Dallas Emmaus Community has placed in us. Even if you cannot attend Candlelight or closing, keep us and our work on His behalf bathed in your prayers and thoughts that weekend.

Message from the DEC Communications Chair

And We Continue Our Walk......

Hour 36 out of our 72 hour Walk to Emmaus.... waking up on that morning....  You feel you know the drill.  Your mind is already thinking ahead about what your table can do tonight at PP.  And then the Means of Grace talk is given.   Our God is an awesome God isn't he?  My table sisters and I were feeling God's grace and love and forgiveness.    Agape was flowing into the conference room and our cabins and especially our hearts.

angel On Saturday night we had visions of angels all around us.

Luke 24: 22-23

"In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning, but didn't find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive."

Remember your Walk...and prayerfully consider sponsoring a pilgrim.

Oh the places you will go....with Christ!

TECHNICALLY INCLINED VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Dallas Emmaus Community needs a group of technically inclined women and men to serve the Community on a relatively short-term and in some cases, long-term basis.

For the short term, we need volunteers to assist in designing how we want our community database to function and to automate as many functions as possible, to include on-line registration, tuition payments and report generation capacity such as Walk lists, 4th day lists, etc. Individuals with knowledge of and practical experience with database administration software and their applications are particularly sought. The effort will also include the examination of utilization of a vendor and/or purchase of new software. This commitment will last 3 to 6 months, depending upon the frequency of meetings and needed follow-up.

 Volunteers

A volunteer or volunteers are also needed to serve for the long term as the Community Database Administrator. Terry Hershberger, who has served us admirably in this role for many years, is stepping down as soon as his replacement is identified and trained. Many thanks to Terry for his work to revitalize the database and keep it up to date. This individual or individuals should be well versed in computer technology and database administration, have a flexible schedule, attention to detail and be self motivated.

If you have an interest in either role (or both) please e-mail Chuck Rohre (communications@dallasemmaus.org), Community Communications Chair to indicate your interest. Contact Chuck on his mobile phone 972.839.0884 for questions.

PayPal

You can easily donate money to the Dallas Emmaus Community at any time by clicking  here. PayPal is a secured donations system which directly deposits all funds into the Dallas Emmaus Community account.  This is a great way to make payment for a pilgrim you are sponsoring or to keep the cost affordable for others who may not otherwise have means to sponsor a friend or loved one.

Help Wanted
Working on a Fourth Day Team is a rewarding way to participate in the Emmaus weekend as as the hands and feet of Christ, and the easiest way to stay connected with the Community.  To sign up, email the 4th Day Director for the walk you want to serve on.
