At the fire station, Volente has a working piece of history mounted on the water tower: the old call notification siren. In the "old days" this siren was used when there was a call in district to notify the volunteers that their services were required. The siren was used until the advent of small radio pagers that the volunteer fire fighters would wear on the belt and keep with them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, always ready to respond. We've now moved on to the latest technology which notifies the department members via a simple application on their smart phones, so we are a couple of steps past the old siren days.
With that in mind, we have decided to refurbish and repurpose the siren for community notification. Unlike a tornado siren that tells you to take cover immediately, our siren will indicate to area residents that you need to immediately turn on a TV, radio or check the local news on a smartphone to find out what is going on. This could be used for any type of incident that may affect the district, such as hazmat gas release, wildland fires, dangerous weather or any other type of regional emergency that could endanger the residents.
We will be testing the siren on a regular basis to confirm that it works when we need it. We will be doing the tests on the first Saturday of each month at 12 noon. This way we shouldn't bother anyone too much. We will post the siren test day and time on the front page of the department website and post it on our station sign board to help remind all those that drive by.
