Welcome Back to Another Legislative Session with Education Updates from NHSBA
NHSBA is preparing for the 2013 Legislative Session, and timely "NHSBA Legislative Bulletins" will soon begin a regular schedule. The next House session is Wednesday, January 2, 2013. Committee meetings and hearings will then begin in earnest.
The 2013 Legislative Session is now underway.
Both the NH House and Senate met on Wednesday for "Organization Day". The Senate elected Senator Peter Bragdon of Milford to another term as President; and the House elected Representative Terie Norelli of Portsmouth as Speaker. Also elected by House and Senate legislators were William Gardner for another term as Secretary of State, and Catherine Provencher for another term as State Treasurer.
House Speaker Norelli named Representative Mary Jane Wallner (Concord) as Chair of the House Finance Committee. She also named Representative Steve Shurtleff (Penacook) as majority leader. The Speaker also indicated that committee assignments are being developed and will be announced before the holidays.
In the Senate, President Bragdon will be supported by Senate Majority Leader Senator Jeb Bradley (Wolfeboro). Senator Morse (Salem) will continue to chair the Senate Finance Committee, and Senator Stiles (Hampton) will continue to chair the Senate Education Committee.
While still too early to see the language of actual bills being drafted for the upcoming session, indications of topics to be considered can be determined by reading the titles of potential bills, called LSRs (Legislative Service Request). These bill titles are available on-line here
