Cactus!
By Valerie Cathey
Epiphyllums, commonly called orchid cactus, or 'epies', are a genus of cactus from Central and South America. They have been collected by enthusiasts for hundreds of years, and also crossed to create beautiful hybrids. A wild variety, epiphyllum oxypetalum (night blooming cereus) is a desirable heirloom houseplant. It's large, fragrant, white flowers open late evening and last until the next morning.
There are many hybrids on the market today, with a wide range of flower sizes and colors. An especially lovely hybrid is 'American Sweetheart' with large, colorful red and deep pink blooms.
Another hybrid, 'Just Beautiful', is just like it's name.
'Epies' make great houseplants, given protection from hot sun, watered when lightly dry, and fertilized during the growing season.
