Winter Pruning

It's that time of year again to get out on these warm days and do some pruning.  Major pruning needs to be done while the trees and shrubs are still dormant.  General rule is cut back no more than a third of your shrubs and plants unless your trimming perennials.  Anything that dies to the ground can be cut to the ground or to the new growth around February or March.  Always cut out or off anything that is dead.  If you need help deciding what to do on a specific plant please let us know and we will be glad to help.

Birds of the Panhandle
By Judy Jones

Western Scrub-Jay Aphelocoma californica

Since the first of the year there is a pair of these noisy, showy birds coming to my ground feeder. These crestless jays have a beautiful blue head, wings and tail. To highlight the blue they have a gray back and a white breast with black stripes. They are omnivores and very aggressive at the bird table and watering hole. They like acorns and cache them in the ground to be eaten later, in so doing often they fail to return and we wind up with seedling acorns in the flower bed. Their loud fussy calls gives a group of them the name a 'scold' of jays. To attract these pretty birds provide sunflower seeds and whole peanuts, they like brushy areas with trees nearby. I find them feeding on the berries on the hawthrone hedge.
