Birds of the Panhandle
By Judy Jones
Blue-winged Teal
Anas discors
The male Blue-winged Teal is easy to identify in breeding plumage by its crescent shaped white patch between the bill and eye. It is a small dabbling duck with a brown body speckled in black and has sky-blue wing coverts. Other ducks with blue wings are the Cinnamon Teal and the Northern Shoveler.Mid April is the time they usually pass through the Texas Panhandle headed to the Prairie Pothole Region(PPR) of the Great Plains.September they pass through again headed south for the winter. Teal season in Texas is from September 15th to the 30th. Their fast erratic flight pattern make them a challenge for hunters and their handsome plumage makes them beautiful mounts. They like to feed in shallow water, so our playas when filled with water are a resting spot for them. These small ducks are late nesters and are the first to leave in the fall and the last to head north in the spring.
