Free Tax Prep for Hoosiers
Filing taxes. An easy thing for some people, and almost impossible for others. Complicated forms and changing regulations can intimidate even the most confident taxpayer. Thousands of local families who need their refunds to make ends meet may pay tax preparation fees they can't afford and miss out on simple items like the Earned Income Tax Credit that could boost their income.
The Free Community Tax Service, led by United Way, removes those barriers by offering free tax preparation assistance to individuals and households with annual incomes below $54,000 ($62,000 with MyFreeTaxes.org). Sites begin opening January 26th and appointments can be scheduled right now.
Last year, 3,553 low- and moderate-income families who sought help from the Free Community Tax Service saved over $925,000 in tax preparation fees and received federal and state refunds to provide for their families. Having those funds come back to our community also reduces the burden on the agencies that provide the essentials. Read More >>
