"E" Stands for Early Learning!

It has been a busy month for our early learning initiatives! Your support is actively helping our youngest citizens have the best start in life.

Our Born Learning initiative has formed a new relationship with local Starbucks stores! Through April 10th at the four stand-alone stores Starbucks team members are organizing an in-store book drive! Consider contributing a new or gently-loved book appropriate for tiny learners under 5. They will go to local children in need of a good book to call their own!

And if you visit any of theseStarbucks locations you will notice our new Born Learning posters! These irresistible posters encourage families to read aloud with their children to develop brain and language skills and build strong, loving bonds. As you know, reading aloud with your children is one the most important things you can do to prepare them for reading and learning in school.

In other early learning news, our commitment to early learning opportunities was recently recognized by the South Central Indiana Association for the Education of Young Children (SCIAEYC). As a thank you for our service, we received a children's book titled "Journey" that beautifully captured our belief that early education is a lifelong journey that begins at home. Read More >>

Live United Spotlight: Meet
 Mary Boucherle

Mary Boucherle knows taxes like the back of her hand. She began working for the Internal Revenue Service by answering calls on the toll-free number. Twenty-three years later, she retired from her position as a Tax Analyst advising 97 Taxpayer Assistance Centers. During her time with the IRS, Mary developed a wealth of tax knowledge.

Today, we're lucky she shares that knowledge with volunteers, partners, and clients through United Way's Free Community Tax Service.

While volunteering her talent 18-22 hours per week as a Free Community Tax Service (FCTS) Site Coordinator at the Owen County Public Library, Mary also manages and hones the talent of other United Way FCTS volunteers.

"Volunteering is a way to use the knowledge and experience I gained as an IRS employee to give back to my community. Tax law is complex and can be intimating for lots of people. I strive to make the tax preparation process as easy as possible for all of our clients and for our volunteers."

The Free Community Tax Service, led by United Way and the Financial Stability Alliance, helps low- and moderate-income people file taxes for free and claim valuable credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC. Read More >>
