A Time of Thanks  atimeofthanks
As holidays approach, we are especially thankful for all of our donors and community partners. Because of you, we are able to create a better today and a better tomorrow for our community.

Your support means we can help ensure our youth achieve their potential, hard working families can get ahead, and everyone can access basic needs. We are able to focus on helping in the shot-term while creating long-term solutions to the most pressing issues in our community. Thank You!

If you have not yet given to the 2013-2014 United Way Campaign, please consider giving today.

Meet Kelli Wesley:
Live United Spotlight

As a youth, Kelli Wesley was able to see United Way in a unique light. Even though she did not attend campaign presentations or distribute pledge cards then, she did learn how United Way was serving the community every night at the dinner table. At the time, her father was the Executive Director.

Growing up with a father so involved in United Way drives her commitment to the organization. Because of him, she was able to see how many people United Way helps and the impact it has on their lives. One of the most important lessons he taught her was to give in whatever way she could - time, treasure, or talent - and that by simply living this way she would inspire others to give.

Today, that is exactly what she is doing. Kelli is a long-time donor to United Way, and for the last five years she has been deeply involved with the United Way Campaign at work. Kelli is now the Manager of Laboratory Technical Services at IU Health Bloomington. Read More >>

Sarah Hayes Joins United Way Team

United Way of Monroe County recently welcomed Sarah Hayes as our new Resource Development Director. Sarah will lead donor relations, fundraising, and workplace campaigns.

Previously she served as the Monroe County Humane Association Executive Director and worked for nearly 5 years at the Indiana University Foundation in marketing and analytical services.

According to Executive Director Barry Lessow, "Sarah is a valuable addition to our team as she brings almost 15 years of success in fundraising events, grant procurement, planned giving, volunteer management, and community outreach."

According to Sarah, "I'm excited to be part of the United Way team that makes our community better."  Sarah is excited to have the opportunity to help many nonprofits within the Bloomington community.

Nourishing our Community

Provide healthy food to low-income families and individuals. Be a friendly face to help those in need feel comfortable while seeking assistance. Set a good example to her son and teach him the importance of volunteering. These are just a few reasons Staci chooses to volunteer at United Way member agency Mother Hubbard's Cupboard.

Staci knows from her own experience how difficult it can be to come in for assistance that first time. Agencies like Mother Hubbard's Cupboard are essential for many families to obtain nutritious, healthy food. Locally, 1 in 5 children experience hunger. For Staci, being able to access a welcoming food pantry has provided vital nutrients to her growing 6-year-old son, Forest.

In addition to a food pantry stocked with healthy food available for no charge to community members in need, Mother Hubbard's Cupboard also provides over 60 nutrition education classes per year.

Working Together for Solutions  workingtogether
United Way of Monroe County's Parent and Community Engagement team (PaCE) is building networks and strengthening collaboration among local social service agencies. We recently hosted local early childhood learning professionals at the inaugural "Developing Communities, Building Families" event on November 5th.

Helping children start school ready to succeed is at the heart of everything PaCE does. PaCE brings together social service providers who interact with families and caregivers. This team finds better ways to help our community increase healthy early childhood intellectual and emotional development.

Developing Communities, Building Families brought together 29 early childhood professionals representing 21 social service agencies to foster connection, exchange ideas, and create a space for learning. Read More >>

Thankful in so many ways...

We asked United Way staff to share how each of us is thankful to our community:

"I'm thankful that I have a job that I'm passionate about and excited to go to every day. I feel privileged to work with so many volunteers and organizations committed to making our community better. Thank YOU!" ~ Ashley Hall, Community Initiatives Director

"I'm incredibly grateful to all our donors who make a commitment each year to create a better tomorrow for our community. Many critical needs and services would be unavailable for so many without the continued heartwarming generosity of our donors." ~ Sarah Hayes, Resource Development Director

"I am grateful for everyone who makes sacrifices, large and small, to create a positive difference in the life of someone else. Thank you to those who look for opportunities to make the extra effort, to use their skills and resources in pursuit of a better outcome, to energetically fulfill the responsibilities they've been given, and to think generously about how their actions will impact others." ~ Barry Lessow, Executive Director

"I'm filled with thanks for living in a generous and compassionate community. We are each made stronger when we care for those around us. And every day I see people doing just that... taking care of each other, volunteering their time, offering a smile, or giving assistance to someone they may or may not know. I'm grateful for these seemingly small, yet significant, actions that happen in our midst." ~ Jennifer Hottell, Community Engagement Director

"I'm thankful for the supportive community we have in Bloomington and beyond! Our interns and colleagues are truly fantastic!" ~ Ashley Schoolman, Community Initiatives Assistant Director

"Ever since I was on the United Way board in 1995, I've been hooked and am proud to help increase our organized capacity to care for one another.  I am thankful to learn from others in the community about how we help people in need and also thankful that we receive support from community members in all walks of life." ~ Liz Feitl, AFL-CIO Community Service Liaison
