The Columbus Foundation supports After School Program
_________________________

Please join us in thanking
The Columbus Foundation
for their generous support of Urban Concern's After School Program for the 2013-14 school year.  The grant was made through the Foundation's
Anonymous Charitable Fund.

The After School Program has been serving at-risk youth in our community since 1991, helping students achieve their full academic and personal potential as students at Harambee Christian School.  We are grateful for The Columbus Foundation's ongoing support, which helps us empower students to be agents of positive change in South Linden and the world.

Point Break anti-bullying workshop breaks

To kick off the 2013-2014 year, Harambee students participated in a number of workshops aimed at helping them succeed during their time at school and in their personal lives.  One workshop, Central Ohio Youth for Christ's Point Break, taught students to form positive relationships based on compassion and understanding in place of destructive behavior like bullying.

The Central Ohio Youth for Christ's website states:  "Point Break is a day-long workshop designed to promote resiliency among students. Resilient students display social competence, problem-solving skills, personal responsibility and a sense of purpose and hope for the future. Students learn to choose conflict resolution over conflict and respect for others

Students practice hugs and handshakes

 over disrespect."

Students participated in a number of fun activities that focused on building team work and cooperation, as well as teachings covering the negative effects of labeling and the unity and equality that God has given all believers in Christ (see Galatians 3:28).

According to Youth Coordinator, Brandon Grant, "Point Break gave our students and staff the rare opportunity to be open and honest about their struggles. This is a special program that I believe helped everyone to connect better with each other."

The Point Break workshop promotes many of Harambee's character essentials for students:  Humility, Grit, Faith, Integrity, Zest, Hope, Love, and Gratitude.  By embracing these values, we know students can succeed and become agents of positive change in our community and the world.
