Harambee has strongest academic year in history
2011-12 was another strong year academically for HCS staff and students.
In fact, it was the strongest academically to date, as measured both by the Measures of Academic Progress Assessment Percentile Rank and the Ohio Achievement Assessment Performance Index.
In the Fall 2011, students returned to school after just six weeks of summer break, as we transitioned to a new school year calendar. For the first time, students outperformed themselves in the fall compared to the prior spring. We believe the new calendar accounts, in part, for the highest academic scores to date.

Siemer Family Foundation supports after school enrichment at Harambee
 | |
The After School Program enriches students both academically and personally.
|
When the school bell rings at 3:30, students at Harambee Christian School are hitting the books, rather than hitting the streets. Urban Concern knows how pivotal the hours of 3:30 - 5:30 are in the a neighborhood characterized by higher than average poverty and teen pregnancy rates, high crime, dropout and unemployment rates, and public schools in "Academic Emergency." During these hours, when most juvenile crimes occur, another option is needed for the students of South Linden. For that reason, Urban Concern started the After School Program (ASP) in 1990. Since then, the ASP has grown to serve up to 80 at-risk youth over a year-round school calendar. The Siemer Family Foundation is a long time supporter of Urban Concern and the After School Program, and we are grateful to partner with them again for the 2012-13 school year. Thank you Siemer Family Foundation! -- |
Harambee character essentials: Humility by Meri Benadum
The theme of our 2012-2013 school year is "Character." Each month in our school-wide assembly, The Gathering, teachers and staff work to highlight one of the eight "character essentials."
This month, teachers were asked to nominate one student who demonstrates humility. 4th grade teacher, Cheryl Hunter, nominated Johnny L:
 | |
Johnny L. has learned a thing or two about humility.
|
"Johnny has really grown in humility. He is able to humbly respond to his imperfections. He is learning to take bad circumstances and turn them into opportunities to learn rather than opportunities to be angry or resentful. I am very proud of Johnny."
Johnny has been a student at Harambee since kindergarten. His favorite recess activity is playing Star Wars with his friends and his favorite pizza topping is pepperoni. When Johnny was asked what it means to be humble, he said, "it means to be forgiving and not getting mad when other people mess up." Johnny's favorite bible verse (which he quoted by memory) is Matthew 22:39 because "it talks about putting other people before yourself." Johnny explained Mrs. Hunter is "a great teacher because she is kind, forgiving, and promotes you. She helps you set a goal for yourself and then helps you reach it."
We look forward to seeing God continue to transform our students' characters!
