The Entrepreneurial Spirit

A business has to be involving, it has to be fun, and it has to exercise
your creative instincts."  - Richard Branson, entrepreneur

The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in several St. Stephen's alumni. Take a look at what they've used their creative instincts to build. We celebrate their talent, ambition and hard work in pursuing their passion!

Maria Andy '89
Maria Andy's Miami-based fashion blog was recently featured live on The Today Show with Natalie Morales. While Maria is a journalist for The Miami Herald, Miami.com, The Huffington Post and Ocean Drive Magazine, her passion project - www.thewordygirl.co - is gaining national recognition for her witty, funny and no-holds-barred approach to fashion. When not sweating her next assignment over a hot keyboard, Maria can be found chasing around her two children, Ava and Yiani, reading New York Times best sellers or playing in Facebook.

John Brevard Begeman '95
John Brevard is an artist and designer whose metaphysically inspired work spans from art to architecture. He received a bachelor's degree in architecture along with a masters of science in sustainable design and construction from the University of Florida. While researching for his master's thesis, he traveled to Asia, Europe and South America. He launched a jewelry line in 2012 and is introducing a shoe line this year. His boutique in Coral Gables features his jewelry, furniture, fashion and accessories.

Robert Caldwell '95
Robert founded Hotel Humidor, which places top selling cigars and humidors in restaurants, hotels and retail stores in 2007. Some of their clients include W Hotels, the James Hotels, and the Four Seasons Hotels to name a few.  He co-founded the Wynwood Cigar Factory in 2012, which manufactures the ultra-premium Wynwood Cigar line. In addition, it is home to a collection of beautiful murals and art. The artists not only display their art at the factory but also design and paint the cigar boxes that The Wynwood Cigar Factory uses.  The factory is a 5,000 square foot mixture of cigar factory, lounge and gallery. Robert was recently featured in Modern Luxury Miami and Haute Living

Emmett Moore '00
Emmett attended Design and Architecture Senior High School and completed a BFA in Furniture Design at Rhode Island School of Design.  He has exhibited at the Museum of the Rhode Island School of Design and has been included in group exhibitions such as P.S. at The Frost Art Museum. Last spring he exhibited in a solo exhibition at Locust Projects, High, Low, and Inbetween. He is represented by Gallery Diet  where he had a one man show last October entitled Surface Tension.  It included paintings and furniture designs. He staged the entire exhibition for the last show at the Miami Art Museum (MAM) before its move to Museum Island, and his work was projected on every wall at the annual MAM fundraising gala in January. He was also featured in the November 2012 Conde Nast Traveler Magazine about Art Basel Miami and was interviewed on the Deco Drive television show in connection with his work. Top left, Emmett is pictured with MIami Art Museum Director Thom Collins and his Locust Project Show is show at bottom left. You can find out more at emmettmoore.com.

In the Fall 2012 newsletter, we featured two other young entrepreneurs. Both are doing well in their endeavors. Here's a brief recap:

Daniel Hernandez '02
Daniel co-founded Miayo's with longtime friend Raul Henriquez. Miayo's espadrilles are made in Spain but inspired by the colors and style of Miami. The Playground Series features local names (Brickell Avenue, Lincoln Road, Ocean Drive, etc.) and the bright colors and palm tree logo embody the spirit of their beloved hometown.

Michael Sullivan '99
In November, Michael opened his first restaurant OTC at 1250 S. Miami Avenue. OTC has a fun, young and social environment. In addition to delicious food, OTC focuses on a craft beer and wine program. Craft beers rotate continually to ensure high quality beer as well as showcase the new flavors of the month or season. Wines by the glass and bottle deliver exceptional value and come from small vineyards that are not widely distributed locally. OTC was nominated for the Johnson & Wales University/Miami Magazine Zest 2013 Newcomer of the Year Award!
