Investiture Ceremonies for New District Court Judges

Eight new District Court judges are launching 2015 by pronouncing their judicial oaths to uphold justice in our community. On January 2, Judges William "Bill" Kephart, Jim Crockett, Linda Marquis and Denise L. Gentile took their oath.

Tomorrow, on Friday, January 9, at 2 p.m., Judges Richard Scotti, Rebecca L. Burton, Rena G. Hughes and Lisa M. Brown will pronounce their oath at the Clark County Government Center.

Court of Appeals Investiture Ceremony and Reception

Members of the state bar are invited to witness the investiture of Hon. Michael P. Gibbons, Hon. Abbi Silver and Hon. Jerome T. Tao, as they take the official oath of office as judges of Nevada's new Court of Appeals. The ceremony will take place January 12, at 10 a.m., at the Carson City Community Center Theater. A reception at the Law Library and Main Rotunda of the Supreme Court Building will immediately follow.

The Family Law, Gaming Law, Litigation, Appellate Litigation, Construction Law, Business Law, and Environmental & Natural Resources sections of the State Bar of Nevada are proud sponsors of the investiture ceremony and reception.

Accepting Applications for Open Judicial District Court Seats

The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection is currently accepting applications for three open judicial positions. The appointments of Judges Michael P. Gibbons, Abbi Silver and Jerome T. Tao to the Nevada Court of Appeals created two vacancies in the Eighth and one in the Ninth Judicial District Courts.

The appointment process is open to all Nevada attorneys with 10 years of legal experience, including two years in Nevada. Applications may be submitted to the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) in Carson City or Las Vegas, according to application instructions. Applications for these vacancies are available online.

Applicants must submit a hard copy of the completed application to the AOC by 5 p.m. on January 28. The application must specify the open seat sought by the applicant. Under rule amendments recently approved by the commission, applications that are filed late or are incomplete will be rejected.

Justice Hardesty New Chief Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court
Justice Hardesty

On January 5, 2015, Justice James W. Hardesty became Chief Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court, taking over from Justice Mark Gibbons, who served as the administrative head of Nevada's judicial branch of government throughout 2014.

Hardesty is a Nevada native, born and raised in Reno. He graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno and practiced law in Reno from 1975 through 1998, at which time he was elected to the District Court bench in Washoe County. He was elected to the Supreme Court in 2004 and previously served as Chief Justice in 2009.

Spend a Few Hours as a Mock Trial Volunteer

Nevada's southern mock trial teams desperately need volunteers to help judge their upcoming high school mock trial competition. Volunteer judges sit in the jury box during the mock trials and score the participants' performances in the courtroom. They will also be allowed to offer constructive criticism and helpful tips following the presentation of the trial.

The Southern Regional Competition takes place on Saturday, February 14, 2015, at the Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas. Volunteers are needed for both the morning (7:45 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.) and afternoon (12:15 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.) sessions. Those interested in participating in the southern competition should contact Kathleen Dickinson at [email protected].
