Court Seeks Lawyer Representatives for U.S. District Court
The United States District Court for the District of Nevada is accepting applications for the position of lawyer representative.
During their three-year terms, lawyer representatives provide vital input to the court on issues affecting the operations of the federal courts. Those issues include, but are not limited to: rule changes, the development of new programs, the design of new court facilities and the expenditure of funds from the non-appropriated account.
To be considered for the position of lawyer representative, applicants must be:
- Admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court of Nevada and actively involved in federal practice;
- Interested in the purpose and framework of the Circuit Conference and willing and able to actively contribute to the creation of the District Conference, and;
- Willing to assist in implementing conference and district court programs with local bar associations.
Those interested in serving as lawyer representatives should submit a letter of interest detailing their federal experience and reasons they would like to be considered to: Mr. Lance S. The deadline is Friday, May 30, 2014. The court will select a list of finalists and submit it to the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Nevada for final selection. Questions should be directed to Lance Wilson at (702) 464-5456.

Solo and Small Practice Section Mixer
The Solo and Small Practice Section will be holding a mixer on March 26, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at McFadden's Restaurant and Saloon in Las Vegas. The restaurant is located in Town Square, at 6593 Las Vegas Blvd.
Richard Scotti of the state bar's Board of Governors will give a short presentation on the recent amendment to Supreme Court Rule 73 concerning civility and professionalism.

Prof. Katyal to Speak at Litigation and Appellate Litigation Section Event
The state bar's Appellate Litigation Section and Litigation Section are partnering to present distinguished guest speaker Neal Katyal, the Paul and Patricia Saunders Professor of Law at Georgetown University. Those wishing to attend should RSVP to Marla Hudgens at MHudgens@LRRLaw.com.
The event will take place on Thursday, May 22 at 6 p.m., at the Mob Museum in Las Vegas (visit the museum's website for directions). The event hosts will provide appetizers and beverages. Attendance is free, but organizers ask that attendees make a contribution to support Nevadans for a Court of Appeals.
Katyal is a partner at Hogan Lovells. He recently served as Acting Solicitor General of the United States, where he argued several major Supreme Court cases involving a variety of issues. In 2006, Katyal won the landmark Hamdan v. Rumsfeld case in the Supreme Court, a case that challenged President George W. Bush's Guantanamo and Geneva Convention policies. CLE: Simple Estate Planning and Handling Small Estates in Nevada
This seminar, intended for those interested in learning simple estate planning, including preparation of wills and trusts, takes place in Las Vegas on Monday, March 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the offices of Gordon Silver and in Reno on Friday, March 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Northern Nevada Bar Center.
The seminar is free to attorneys who commit to taking a pro bono case or to provide legal counseling at an upcoming Nevada Legal Services clinic. For those not wishing to volunteer, tuition is $150. Attendees can earn 7.5 CLE hours (including 1 ethics hour).

Free CLE:Ask-A-Lawyer Training
Attorneys looking for discreet volunteer opportunities that don't require a huge time commitment, and those wanting to learn the basics of Small Claims Court should look no farther than "Ask-A-Lawyer Training: Small Claims, Big Impact."
This CLE seminar takes place on Thursday, March 27 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada. Jim Berchtold, Directing Attorney of the Civil Law Self-Help Center, will present an overview of the procedures and rules of Small Claims Court. Lunch will be provided.

Boyd Presents Judge Lloyd D. George Lecture on Judicial Process
UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law is pleased to present its inaugural Judge Lloyd D. George Lecture on the Judicial Process. The lecture will take place on Thursday, April 3 at 4 p.m. in the Thomas & Mack Moot Court. A reception will take place immediately following the lecture.
