The Impact of Depression and Addiction on Professional Competence

This seminar, presented by the Young Lawyers Section of the state bar, will cover the consequences of untreated depression and addiction, and how attendees can identify the warning signs of such disorders. Presenter Angela Baur of Solutions Recovery will also explain the importance of early recognition and go over intervention strategies and effective treatment options.

This program provides an hour of substance abuse, addiction and mental health CLE credit and, more importantly, provides attorneys with knowledge they can use to help friends, colleagues and family members suffering from depression or addiction.

Lunch is included.

Solo and Small Practice Section Members Invited to Attend ABA Telephonic Meetings

The GP Solo Division of the American Bar Association (ABA) extends an invitation to members of the State Bar of Nevada's Solo and Small Practice Section. Its members may now attend the ABA's monthly brown bag telephonic lunches free of charge in February, March and April.

February's topic is: Group Legal Services - What's in it for You! Registrants do not need to be ABA members, just members of the state bar's Solo and Small Practice Section.

For more information and to register, visit the ABA's website and create an ABA account, or contact section chair Laura Stubberud at laura@stubberudlaw.com.

Northern Attorneys: Join the Advertising Committee

The State Bar of Nevada seeks interested members to fill vacancies for volunteer appointments to the Northern Nevada Attorney Advertising Committee. To be considered for the vacancies, submit a committee appointment application, letter of interest and resume to State Bar of Nevada, Attn: Advertising Committee, 600 E. Charleston Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89104, or e-mail to luisac@nvbar.org.

The committee meets once a month, either in person or electronically, specifically by e-mail correspondence, to review attorney advertisements submitted pursuant to RPC 7.2A and to render advance advisory opinions upon request. Because it is anticipated that review and communication will largely be accomplished through electronic mediums, committee members should be proficient with computer, e-mail and internet use.

LBA Hosts Annual Latino Community Mixer

This month, the Las Vegas Latin Bar Association (LBA) is hosting its second annual Latino Community Mixer. The mixer will take place on Wednesday, February 19, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Ricardo's restaurant, located at 4930 W. Flamingo Rd., Las Vegas. Please RSVP by e-mailing the LBA at latinobarlv@gmail.com.

Various organizations will be participating in the event, and LBA board member, Assemblywoman Lucy Flores, will give a 10 to 15 minute presentation on the newly enacted Assembly Bill 74, which requires professional documentation preparers to register with the state of Nevada. This is an excellent opportunity to unwind while getting to know members of Latino-based organizations in the Las Vegas valley.

Moot Court Competition Seeks Volunteer Judges

The ABA Law Student Division needs 1,500 licensed attorneys to serve as moot court competition judges in February/March at federal and state courthouses in Boston, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Seattle. The Las Vegas Regional National Appellate Advocacy Competition (NAAC) takes place February 27 through March 1 at the U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada.

As judges, volunteers will have the opportunity to interact with the finest advocates from law schools across the country. With 203 teams from 118 ABA-approved law schools competing at the regional level, NAAC is one of the largest moot court competitions in the country.

Please visit the ABA's website for details on the regional moot court competitions or to sign up as an oral argument judge.
