Mock Trial Attorney Coaches Needed For Las Vegas High School

The 2014 Mock Trial state finals are fast approaching and, due to unforeseen circumstances, the three teams at Advanced Technologies Career Academy (at 2501 Vegas Dr., in Las Vegas) are without attorney coaches during this final crucial preparation stage.

No matter how much they study and practice, these teams will be at a disadvantage this year - unless members of the State Bar of Nevada step in to help. All of the other teams at participating high schools in the north and south have an attorney in their corner, coaching them through the twists and turns of the legal system.

To learn more about what coaching entails or to volunteer, contact the Law Related Education staff: Kathleen Dickinson at Kathleend@nvbar.org, (702) 317-1408; and Cathi Britz at Cathib@nvbar.org, (702) 317-1416.

If you aren't sure this is a job you can do, you are encouraged to ask questions. What it takes may be exactly what you have to give!

Appointment of Standing Committee on Judicial Ethics and Election Practices

The Standing Committee on Judicial Ethics and Election Practices has vacancies for two-year terms beginning January 2014. The Board of Governors of the State Bar of Nevada will appoint attorney members to fill the vacancies. Interested applicants should complete an online application form. Applications must be received by noon on February 7.

The Standing Committee on Judicial Ethics and Election Practices was created to resolve ethical disputes arising in the course of campaigns for judicial office and to provide judges and aspirants to judicial office with advisory opinions regarding ethical matters that may arise in the ordinary course of judicial service or in the elective or appointment process. Each member is appointed for a two-year term with no member appointed to more than four consecutive terms.

LRIS Public Service Grant Program

The State Bar of Nevada is accepting applications for the LRIS Public Service Grant Program. The grants will assist Nevada organizations in funding law-related public service and/or law-related educational activities. The bar grants awards annually on a "funds-available" basis. All applications are subject to review and final approval by the Board of Governors of the state bar.

For more information or an application, visit the state bar's website or e-mail Lori Wolk at loriw@nvbar.org. Applications must be postmarked by February 28.

Public Interest Law Association Auction

The 15th Annual Public Interest Law Association (PILA) Auction will take place on Thursday, February 6, at 6 p.m. at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts.

This year, PILA honors Bill Curran with the Silver Staircase Award for his inspiring pro bono work and community development initiatives. The Annual PILA Auction serves as the primary fundraiser for the organization, and the proceeds provide grants to students for summer work in unfunded or underfunded public interest positions.

Those interested in attending should RSVP to PILA.UNLV@gmail.com. For more information on the event or for information on sponsorship and/or donations, contact Laura Guidry at guidryl@unlv.nevada.edu or Kendra Jepsen at jepsenk@unlv.nevada.edu.
