Justice Gibbons Assumes Role as Chief Justice
Justice Gibbons assumed the leadership role at the Nevada Supreme Court this week. Gibbons replaced Chief Justice Kristina Pickering on January 6. Pickering served as Chief Justice for a year, during which she represented the judiciary at the Nevada Legislature; the 2013 legislative session saw the passage of 166 bills affecting Nevada's courts. The legislative measure with the greatest potential impact on the judicial branch, Nevada's businesses and citizens was Senate Joint Resolution 14, which lets voters decide whether or not Nevada may establish a much-needed appellate court. Every legislator present voted in favor of placing the issue on the November 2014 ballot. During his tenure, Gibbons will continue to support that important issue. Under the Nevada Constitution, only justices in the last two years of their current six-year term of office are eligible to serve as Chief Justice. Pickering and Gibbons chose to split the duties, with Pickering serving in the role for the first year of the two-year cycle and Gibbons taking the second. |
