Watch Out for IOLTA Scam Emails

Attorneys - be aware that scammers are using improved techniques. Of particular concern are e-mails addressed to lawyers referencing IOLTA accounts.

Scam artists are using extremely accurate reproductions of e-mails, which appear to come from major banking institutions, for "phishing" or other scams.

These e-mails frequently appear to come from legitimate sources and include legitimate-appearing text, links and attachments; however, the links do not lead to authentic banking sites, and the attachments are likely to be malware.

Text of fraudulent IOLTA e-mails will be similar to the following:

"We received a check request in the amount of $19,521.42  for the above referenced file. However, the attached report reflects a $0 balance. At your earliest convenience, please advise how the request is to be funded. Thanks."

Please be vigilant when dealing with unsolicted e-mails.
