Written Opinions Sought on Reappointment of Magistrate Judge Foley

The current term of office of United States Magistrate Judge George W. Foley, Jr., expires on August 3, 2013. The United States District Court is required by law to establish a panel of citizens to consider the reappointment of the magistrate judge to a new eight-year term.

The duties of a magistrate judge in this court include conducting preliminary proceedings in criminal cases; trials and dispositions of misdemeanor cases; conducting various pretrial matters and evidentiary proceedings on delegation from the judges of the district court; and trial and disposition of civil cases upon consent of the litigants.

The public is invited to submit written comments on whether or not the panel should recommend Foley for reappointment. Please send comments to Magistrate Judges Panel, c/o U.S. District Court Executive, 333 Las Vegas Boulevard South, Las Vegas, Nevada 89101. Comments must be received by Friday, March 1, 2013. Please mark all correspondence confidential.

Bar president Frank Flaherty accepts ABA award.

The American Bar Association (ABA) honored Nevada's bench and bar at its midyear meeting in Dallas. On February 8, 2013, the ABA presented bar president Frank Flaherty with an award recognizing the strength of Nevada's 2012 Law Day programming. Nevada is one of only three states in the nation receiving the ABA Law Day Outstanding Activity Award - an award it also won last year.

Law Day is a nationwide, law-related educational program that takes place every spring.

Organizers are planning another comprehensive, month-long Law Day program for 2013. This year's theme is Realizing the Dream: Equality for All. Events will kick off with Law Day Live on April 25.

For more information on Law Day, and the Law Day 2013 theme, visit the ABA's website.
