ABA Honors Nevada Supreme Court's Law Day Programs

For the second year in a row, the American Bar Association (ABA) recognized the high level of participation and planning the Nevada Supreme Court puts towards Law Day. Law Day is a nationwide, law related educational program that takes place every spring.

The 2012 Law Day theme was, "No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom." The Supreme Court headed a discussion on this topic, in which students, attorneys and members of the bench from all over the state were able to participate through video conferencing. The Supreme Court also utilizes Facebook and Twitter to bring the discussion to the public.

Nevada is one of only three states in the nation receiving the ABA Law Day Outstanding Activity Award. State Bar of Nevada Executive Director Kimberly Farmer and bar president Frank Flaherty will accept the award on February 8, 2013, at the ABA's Midyear Meeting in Dallas, Texas.

For more information on Law Day, and the Law Day 2013 theme, visit the ABA's website.

Ethics, Education and Entertainment: A One-Stop CLE for Nevada Attorneys

The State Bar of Nevada is a proud sponsor of Bank of Nevada's "Ethics of Trial and Appellate Practice" seminar, to take place Tuesday, February 26, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Presenters Justice Michael Douglas, Justice James Hardesty and Judge Rob Bare will discuss effective opening and closing arguments, use of expert witnesses (including treating physicians) and other topics including appellate and writ practice. Relevant Nevada Supreme Court cases and statutes will be provided for each topic and the presentation will be augmented with the use of relevant clips from well-known films and television spots. Following the seminar, attendees are invited to a networking event at the Cabaret Jazz Room in the Smith Center for Performing Arts.

This informative event fulfills the entire year's ethics credit requirement and the $125 tuition counts towards Rule 6.1 pro bono contributions. All proceeds will go to benefit civil legal aid. For more information, download the brochure; to register visit the state bar's website.

Serving Seniors Program and CLE

The Young Lawyers Section (YLS) of the State Bar of Nevada and Nevada Legal Services are partnering to sponsor the Serving Seniors Program on April 19, 2013 in Reno and on April 26, 2013 in Las Vegas. Through Serving Seniors, attorneys may volunteer their time to teach senior citizens about estate planning and provide them with information that could protect them from becoming victims of fraud and abuse.

To prepare for the event, organizers are presenting a CLE seminar on simple estate planning and handling small estates. The Reno CLE is scheduled for March 25, 2013, at the Northern Nevada Bar Center, 9456 Double R Boulevard, Suite B; the Las Vegas seminar takes place March 22, 2013 at the offices of Gordon Silver, 3960 Howard Hughes Parkway, sixth floor conference room

The CLE is free to attorneys volunteering at the Serving Seniors event. Those interested in volunteering should contact northern Nevada YLS Chair Joe Gorman at joe@ejgormanlaw.com or southern Nevada YLS Chair Kristin Tyler at KTyler@gordonsilver.com.

Member Service: Using Fastcase to Copy Citations

Don't let the tedious process of copying down case citations sidetrack your research project. Use the Copy Citation function in Fastcase to automatically copy and paste the citation of the case you are quoting into your working document.

Here's how it works:

  • First, access the case that you want to cite; make sure that you are in the full case text view and not on the results screen.
  • Second, select "Copy Citation" from the Document menu.
  • Finally, open the document (or e-mail) that you want to paste the citation into, and put your cursor in the appropriate spot in the document. Then just press "Ctrl + V" and the citation will be pasted into the document. (At present, this feature is only compatible with Internet Explorer).

Fastcase is a service available free of charge to all active members of the State Bar of Nevada. If you have questions about using Fastcase, just call customer support at (866) 773-2782 (5 a.m. - 5 p.m. PST, Monday through Friday) or e-mail support@fastcase.com.
