Standing Committee on Judicial Ethics and Election Practices Seeks Applicants for Vacancy

The Standing Committee on Judicial Ethics and Election Practices has one vacancy for a two-year term beginning January 1, 2013. The Board of Governors of the State Bar of Nevada will appoint an attorney member to fill the vacancy at its December 5, 2012 meeting.

The function of the Standing Committee on Judicial Ethics and Election Practices is to resolve ethical disputes arising in the course of campaigns for judicial office, and to provide judges and aspirants to judicial office with advisory opinions regarding ethical matters that may arise in the ordinary course of judicial service or in the elective or appointment process. Terms are two years, and no member may be appointed to more than four consecutive terms.

Interested applicants should complete an online application form. The deadline for applications is noon on November 15, 2012.

Permanent Member Sought For Commission on Judicial Selection

The Commission on Judicial Selection has a vacancy for one permanent member. The term of the appointment will expire on December 31, 2016.

Article 6, Section 20, of the Constitution of the State of Nevada, calls for the Board of Governors (BOG) of the State Bar of Nevada to appoint attorney members to the Commission on Judicial Selection when vacancies arise. The BOG will consider applications at its December 5, 2012 meeting. The Commission on Judicial Selection is scheduled to hold interviews in Ely the week of January 21, 2013 to fill a vacancy in the Seventh Judicial District, Department 2.

Applicants for this appointment may not be residents of Washoe or Douglas County, and must disclose their political party affiliations. Interested applicants should complete an online application form and submit it no later than noon on November 15, 2012.

Eureka, Lincoln or White Pine County Resident Needed for Commission on Judicial Selection

The Commission on Judicial Selection has begun the process to fill the vacancy in the Seventh Judicial District Court, Department 2, and also requires a temporary member to assist with this process.

Pursuant to Article 6, Section 20, Subsection 4(c) of the Constitution of the State of Nevada, the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Nevada will appoint an applicant to fill this vacancy. The appointee must be a State Bar of Nevada member and reside in Eureka, Lincoln or White Pine Counties, the judicial district in which the vacancy occurs.

Interested applicants should fill out an online application form. All applications must be received by noon on November 15, 2012.

Washoe County Resident Sought for Commission on Judicial Discipline

There are no term limits. The Board of Governors of the State Bar of Nevada will appoint an attorney member to fill the vacancy.

A Nevada Constitutional amendment created the Commission on Judicial Discipline to investigate allegations of judicial misconduct in office, violations of the Code of Judicial Conduct, and/or disability of judges. The commission meets approximately six times each year for regularly scheduled meetings, and as necessary by telephone conference. The commission also conducts formal hearings as a court of judicial discipline. Its main office is located in Carson City.

Alternate members of the commission are called upon to serve when an appointed member is disqualified or otherwise unable to serve, or when a vacancy exists on the commission. Some travel will be required of the appointee.

Those interested should complete an online application form. Applications are due no later than noon on November 15, 2012.
