Candidates Sought for Judicial Opening in Seventh Judicial District Court
 

The Commission on Judicial Selection is now accepting applications for the position of judge in the Seventh Judicial District Court, Department 2, due to the retirement of the Honorable Dan Papez. The Seventh Judicial District includes Eureka, Lincoln and White Pine counties.

 

Applications may be obtained via the Supreme Court website. Applications are due no later than Friday, December 14, at 5 p.m. and may only be submitted in hard-copy format. Completed applications should be sent to the Commission Secretary in accordance with the instructions in the application. (NOTE: use only the application provided for this vacancy.)

 

The commission has revised its rules to provide for a more open selection process. A complete copy of the rules can be found at the Commission on Judicial Selection's website.

Pro Bono Week Celebration - Events Start Monday


Pro Bono Week starts Monday, Oct. 22 and continues through Saturday, Oct. 27, and you're invited to celebrate.

  • Las Vegas - Pro Bono Mixer: Join the Access to Justice Commission for a casual evening of good food, cocktails, music and great company on Monday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m. in the Clark County Government Building's Pyramid Room, located at 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, Las Vegas NV, 89106. There is no cost to attend, but space is limited, so RSVP today by e-mailing [email protected].
     
  • Reno - Champions of Justice Luncheon: Join Nevada Legal Services for a special luncheon to honor the 2012 Champions of Justice on Monday, Oct. 22, at 11:30 a.m. in the Tuscany Ballroom of the Peppermill Hotel & Casino. Tickets may be purchased online. The southern Nevada Champions of Justice luncheon will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 24.

Family Law 101 CLE: Volunteer and Attend Free!

 

Nevada Legal Services is presenting a CLE seminar focusing on the basics of family law. The class takes place in Reno at the Northern Nevada Bar Center on Tuesday, October 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and attendees are eligible for 6.5 general and 1 ethics hour of CLE credit.

 

Learn about family law, procedural process, courtroom etiquette, and specific issues concerning child custody, child support, property distributions, and spousal support.

 

For those willing to take a pro bono case or to provide several hours of counseling, seminar attendance is free. Attorneys who cannot provide pro bono services at this time may still attend for a fee.

Basics of Family Law Jurisdiction CLE Supports LASCN

  

On Thursday Nov. 1, from 1 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., the Willick Law Group will present a three-credit-hour training on the basics of jurisdictional analysis as it applies to divorce status, property, alimony, child custody, child support, military retirement and division of property. Jurisdiction in family court will also be covered.

 

The training will be held at Zenoff Hall Training Center at 601 N. Pecos Road (behind family court). Registration is only $30 with costs donated to the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada (LASCN). Download a registration form online or contact [email protected] to attend.

Saltman Center for Conflict Resolution Presents Peace in the Desert Film Screening

 

On Tuesday, Oct. 23, the Saltman Center for Conflict Resolution at the UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law will host a Peace in the Desert film screening and panel discussion. The film is "Streetball Hafla," a film exploring the ways in which basketball has fostered harmonious relationships between Jews and Arabs in Israel.

 

Panelists include: Sasha Nizgoda, whose mother was raised Jewish and whose father was raised Muslim; Gilad Berman, a young Israeli Jewish tennis player who grew up in Israel and now attends UNLV; Ricky Sobers, a former professional basketball player; Tom Jackovic, Executive Director of the USA Track & Field Foundation; and Michael Saltman, Co-Founder of the Saltman Center for Conflict Resolution.
