Make Retirement Your Most Enjoyable Phase of Life

The Big Chill - Boomers' Top 10 Desired Retirement Activities

By Cecily Frazer, CBS.MarketWatch.com

LOS ANGELES (CBS.MW) -- More than 70 million U.S. baby boomers are now marching toward retirement - but what are they going to do once they get there?

Retirement used to be a time to simply relax and live comfortably off fixed pensions and Social Security, often after years of servitude to a single employer.

But boomers liberated from job-hopping careers and later-arriving children want to do more with the fruits of their labor, especially since their longer life spans mean they may have a few decades to pursue adventure and learning.

While some will cease working altogether, eight in 10 boomers plan to work at least part time during retirement, so many of the activities they expect to be engaged in accommodate a working lifestyle, experts say.

"People will begin living a cyclical life plan, go back to school, cease their major career and reinvent themselves in new work," said Ken Dychtwald, an author of books on health and aging issues, including "Age Wave." "People will pursue freedom, not retirement."

Boomers are big fans of weekend getaways, hobbies such as cooking, and home-improvement projects. About one in two are divorced and may be dating again, so many prefer sports, travel and learning adventures that keep them connected with others, said Mary Furlong, founder of Thirdage.com, a Web site for "first-wave" boomers in their mid-40s to mid-50s.

"Part of it is getting in touch with passions they had before, or taking new risks to explore others," Furlong said.

The average boomer estimates he or she will need $40,900 a year (in today's dollars) during retirement to cover recreational activities and living expenses, according to a study by Allstate Financial. Here are the top 10 ways they plan to spend on their leisure activities, and the amount they expect to spend yearly on their chosen pursuits.

Traveling, $7,700
Family activities, $3,900
Hobbies, $2,200
Gardening, $1,500
Fishing, $2,700
Golfing, $3,500
Volunteering, $2,000
Reading, $900
Exercising, $1,500
Home improvement, $7,000

How do you spend your time or intend to spend your time in retirement?

BOOK REVIEW

THE MAGIC OF BELIEVING, Claude Bristol

Claude Bristol's book
, The Magic of Believing, is another of the most influential books in my library. It was well worth the time it took to type my underlines and notes. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.  ENJOY!!

THE MAGIC OF BELIEVING, Claude Bristol

Appeal by drama is the first step in arousing the emotions of the people, no matter for what purpose.

Human imagination or visualization and concentration are the chief factors in developing the magnetic forces of the subconscious mind. After that the subconscious mind goes to work to provide you with your desire.

You've got to see it in your mind's eye, see yourself as holding that job, or actually taking the trip. Biblical warning, "Where there is no vision, the people perish."  is a fundamental truth, whether it is considered individually or collectively. You want a better job? You'll get it when you give your subconscious mind a mental picture of yourself holding that job.

It is pretty well agreed that the subconscious mind works as a result of images thrown upon its screen, but if there is something wrong with your projection apparatus or the original slide, then the projected image is blurred, inverted, or a total blank. Doubts, fears, counter thoughts, all have a part in blurring the pictures you consciously desire to project.

Playing golf: I must have a clear, clean mental picture of what I am doing before I play the shot.  That mental picture takes charge of the muscular reaction.

Experiment: Find a few small stones or pebbles which you can easily throw and locate a tree or a post of six to ten inches in diameter. Stand away from it 25-30 feet or any convenient greater distance and start throwing pebbles in an endeavor to hit it. If you are an average person, most of the stones will go wide of their mark. Now stop and tell yourself that you can hit the objective. Get a mental picture of the tree figuratively stepping forward to meet the missile or the stone actually colliding with the tree in the spot where you want it to strike, and you'll soon find yourself making a perfect score.

Next month we'll about how what we think about repeatedly effects how we appear outwardly.

"The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning."

TAKE A BREAK AND LAUGH ABOUT IT.....

Now That I'm Older and Wiser

* There's always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for it. For example, I'm sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt.

* When I'm feeling down, I like to whistle. It makes the neighbor's dog that barks all the time run to the end of his chain and gag himself.

* If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

* A penny saved is a government oversight.

* The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight, because by then your body and your fat are really good friends.
